Nothing in life is certain, except for death, taxes and a Plex lifetime pass deal

I have had a Plex lifetime pass for over 15 years. I think I paid around $80 back then for it, so this seems like a good price. Worth every penny. I run Plex on a Synology server with 8 drives. If you use Apple products, I highly recommend the Infuse player. It is far superior to the Plex player in many ways.

I have JellyFin running, but it's nowhere near as refined as Plex. I have not run Emby, but I have heard it is not as good as Plex, but there are fanboys of all these apps.

Plex has just been around way longer and has had time to refine their software and add advanced features.

It does have a guide, but if live TV and DVR are your focus then I'd highly recommend Channels DVR or Emby instead. Although Plex has finally made some progress over the years, live TV has never been their focus and they've frequently let show stopping bugs remain for years before even acknowledging them.
Channels seems expensive for an annual subscription. I can do this with Silicon Dust for 38$ per year. From what I understand the free emby has an epg that is also free but does it really work or about the same as plex? What are the drawbacks of emby free?

I've had it forever, Have they figured out a way to integrate IPTV services?
I'd love to be able to record all the content I get on IPTV.

I need to look into that.

Is this year the year? I've been running Plex for my and my family for years. Everything works fine without the pass. I almost want to buy it just because Plex has been so good to me and my family. I run the server and everyone else uses it, in my house and from out of state. I can't figure out what functionality I'll gain with this.

How can you stream out of your network without plex pass?

Just invite other Plex accounts to join your server. It's free to use the feature. I've got a brother in law across town that watches it almost every night. I keep a bunch of shows on there as they are released.

I'm annoyed I didn't grab this back when it was $75. Almost broke down today but with tax it's back up close to $100 which is still too high. Guess I'll keep holding out.

For some reason this seems to be a common misconception, but a plex pass has never been required for remote streaming.

I've never liked SD's guide and their lack of EPG grid, but otherwise their system works well enough as far as I know.

As for Emby, I can't think of any DVR or live TV features that are missing compared to Plex and it's never been riddled with bugs like plex. It's been a while since I bought my premium license so I don't remember exactly what's locked behind the paywall, but if live TV is part of the free tier then you could always install the system to check it out.

I have both Infuse and Plex. Infuse is the better Apple program IMHO for networking within my own home, but Plex is perfect for streaming while traveling and sharing movies with friends from my server.

Plex also updates to the Now Watching tab on my AppleTV where Infuse does not.

Did you even read what you linked?

This has nothing to do with Plex vulnerabilities, which were patched three years before this hack of a person who used their software and happened to work for LastPass.
Yep, I read, just trying to be funny Smilie I , unfortunately, was one of the many who had their vaults stolen in the breach. Thankfully I am not an employee of any bitcoin related company, nor do I hold any coins, so my vault is probably stashed with the rest that are not worth the computing power to hack. That is to say, EXISTING computing power. But at the moment I think it takes quite a long time to crack single vaults, so they are just targeting the ones that would have BTC wallets. If they do end up cracking mine, they will have access to my vast array of pizza store rewards credits! lol.

But yes, the Plex software is solid (as long as it is patched), and I will be sure to add the /s and /jk tags to my postings in the future Smilie

How does Plex compare with Emby for home media management?
I have lifetime for both. Upgraded from Plex to Emby. Plex keeps pushing more and more free streaming crap. You can debloat it, but on a per-user/client basis. They are spending all their development efforts on features nobody wants. Emby is still no frills and does everything I need and nothing I dont.

Emby's real competitor is Jellyfin, which is free and open source. When I got Emby lifetime Jellyfin was still too unpolished and was missing clients on some platforms. I'm not sure if it has closed that gap.

Plex on Apple TV does not support dolby atmos, while Nvidia Shield/FireTV Stick 4K do. Something to consider.

I tried Jellyfin about 2 years ago and it sucked. I switched to Emby due to that reason. Emby's clients (android and ios) leave me wanting for something more polished. For example, the music shuffle algorithm is pretty weak as it keeps repeating similar patterns.

Does this have an electronic programming guide that actually works? I would pull the trigger on this deal but I would like to record OTA tv on my HDHomerun Extend. I know Silicon Dust offers a dvr deal for $38 but I would prefer to pay once especially since OTA schedules should be free as part of the whole digital TV conversion nonsense done by FCC a while ago.
Works great for me.

You mean you don't like the social media aspects they keep adding and won't let you disable?

I just love all of my unplayed content having a "Be the first one among your friends to play this!" UI tag when I haven't even added any guests.

Based on this thread, it doesn't seem that it's widely known that Jellyfin is based on Plex source code or that the base of Plex is open source.

So at the very least, Jellyfin will eventually catch up to or surpass what you can do with Plex Free.
