Because it determines what you see and how it is seen. Cheap lights usually have 6000k and above which is quite harsh and almost blue. The warm yellow lights inside your house are 3,000k. The lower the number the more yellow/red while the higher the number the bluer they are. I personally prefer 4,000k flashlights with high CRI.

Got the TS21 with battery for $22 in a Slickdeal posted about a month ago. Great light, worth the $.
