Still one of the best projectors for most people. The brightness and contrast are hard to beat at this price. https://www.cnet.com/tech/home-en...projector/

Get this or spend a grand to get ls11000. This is DLP vs laser in ls11000. I believe this still needs bulb changes vs laser is good to go for 10k+ hours.
You can change a lot of bulbs for $1000 savings.

It is slightly better mainly depends on your budget for the price savings the 5050ub is still top performing even though it came out in 2019 which surprised me.

Not entirely helpful. The cheapest full 4k projector that I know of is double this price. Furthermore, pixel shifting is stellar. It is 4K for all intensive purposes.

Not entirely. Supposedly the laser only beats it marginally in sharpness. As a current 5020 owner, I can tell you, sharpness is not an issue with a good projector. Mine is 10+ years old and I've never been disappointed in the sharpness. In all other things the 5050 beats the laser especially where it counts...black levels.

I may have to grab this, but I'm tempted to wait until Friday?

How does something like this compare to the Viewsonic PX701 that was on sale on Amazon last week for $670? Need a projector for the basement - don't need top of the line but also looking to get something that will last and show well. Also, I've heard the Viewsonic runs loud which can be annoying?

Main difference is black levels and color accuracy. Basically you know how it looks to see a real cheap LCD TV with horrible contrast? Yeah that is the ViewSonic.

The JVC's and Sony are awfully nice. Went Sony PJ years ago after viewing both (cinema/movies no gaming).

As others have said, this is LCD (also 3 chip) just (big honking) lamp driven vs laser driven. The LS11000 is supposed to have a bit better sharpness, BUT if (when) the laser fails you're out a projector as they're not replaceable for the end-user. Most people don't seem to be bothered by this because either they don't watch a lot of hours on a projector, or assume they'll just go to the replacement at that far off day however the LS11k (like all lasers) just covers the laser for the standard warranty time (the same 2yrs for the LS as every other projector epson sells.)

If my budget was ~3k this is the PJ I'd buy as even though it's a little long in the tooth at approaching 5 yrs old, it's the best lamp driven PJ epson has (note replacement ELPLP89 lamps are $330 through epson which is the highest current replacement cost lamp.) As my current budget is extremely smaller, I'm waiting (in vain?) for the 3800 to drop to the 1k range as a refurbished unit (w/same 2 yr warranty as new on the projector, lamp is warrantied for ~90 days) replacement lamps are $100 for that and it's supposed to be a very decent shifted 4k projector that holds its own against the 4010 from most people's opinions. I'm currently quite happy with my 3rd or 4th epson projector the 2150 ($60 lamps!) so I can personally wait a bit longer but again to anyone who wants to spend this amount on a PJ: you can't go wrong with the 5050UB (if stock comes back on epson, it's the same price there for people trying to dodge amazon sales tax.)

Edit: forgot to mention the only reason (I'd say) to go for the LS over this is it's a high frame rate gaming projector with hdmi 2.1 and support for 4k@120fps.

Lots of new options since I bought my Epson 8100 many years ago for the home theater. I'm still using the original lamp.

I want to replace it. I don't think I need the short throw or ultra short throw feature as the projector is about 12-15' feet from the screen.

What is a 4k good replacement at $2,500 or less? Also, it doesn't need speakers.
