I think they're referring to price-per-TB, so 18 TB for $200 ($11.11/TB) is fairly close to 14TB for $150 ($10.71/TB).

Excellent price per TB, but for almost the same price you can get the WD 18TB from Best Buy which people say is more reliable (in my experience all the major brands are all the same)

Depends on scale of your setup.

For example I have 20 drives, having them in external housings with 20 power bricks wouldn't ideal.

Instead I have a server running in basement.

Also if you shuck them and put it in proper setup you also have proper cooling.

Drives in these external enclosures often run hot.

Other than a little better per tb, is there any reason this 14tb is better than the WD 18tb deal if I wanted the extra storage. I blew through 8tb in two years - and am buying drives again, so why not get the larger drive?

This is $149. The other one is $199. a 34% increase in price "almost the same to you"? Do you work in government?
This is 14tb, the other is 18tb. I am talking per tb cost. 10.64 vs 11.11

Yeah but you don't pay the "cost". You pay the price. And the price is 34% higher. It's $50 difference. And you are saying to purchase the 18tb....Calling it "almost the same" is inaccurate to the point of misleading.

I thought you were replying to my question - not the other similar.

I'll never buy another Seagate. They always fail.

WD or nothing.

Debating.
Among other drives (bought some 18TB drives on sale for $199.99), I also had bought two 14TB WD Elements Certified Refurbished drives from Western Digital directly for $153 each.
Now wondering if I should return those 2 14TB drives (both unopened) to WD - free returns - and go with these 'New' Seagate 14TB drives instead...

Not sure how much use a 'Certified Refurbished' drive sold directly by WD would have...

Decisions, decisions.

This item is Certified Refurbished. It has been professionally restored by a Western Digital approved vendor. Units are usually cosmetically indistinguishable from New products, however some may show signs of light use. Functionally, these units are equivalent to New. Certified Refurbished units will be shipped in a New Brown CR Box

hmm you'd think WD would actually do tests on their recerts.. so that means they're probably actually better tested than a "brand new" seagate 14TB. IMO, I'd keep the two 14TB from WD just bc they've been tested for you already.

Their tests probably consist of a quick visual inspection and *maybe* a power-on to listen for obvious signs of motor/head failures. I don't trust companies to actually refurbish computer parts. Been burned or inconvenienced too many times.

What is the warranty for the 14TB WD?

Reading this article, I am staying away - 5% potential failure rate is a risk I'd rather not take. Will wait for a WD red/shuckable deal to come back again

Just want to add that in a raid array, buying one drive that's larger will not allow you to use the additional space. If you have 3x 12tb and 1x 18tb, the array treats them all as 12tb.
This is true. You should be able to add another volume to use the additional space though...

Will it ST14000NM0121 works with synology nas? Like ds 423 or 923? Check the compatible list in synology website, the drive is not there… any thoughts? Thanks
It should, the "compatibility list" is just drives the company has tested themselves. The DS line isn't restricted to particular drives like the RS line is.
