Great deal for a quality product to reliably open and close a garage door with a modern keypad.

The reviews on battery life are very over blown. At this price point you can purchase a spare battery if you feel charging a battery will be an issue.

A quick Google search of the battery pack - vkp1-myq-bt1... it's $30-$32 on Amazon.

Might want to change that to, "if you feel charging a battery will be an issue, buy 2 of these units and use 1 as a spare battery, and backup if/when the original dies."

Why don't they make one that can connect to the wires?

Worse than battery issue?

Subscription, and overpriced too.

There is no point for needing the subscription. The camera feature is just an added bonus at this price point. For $40 you are getting a well built keypad that replaces the dated garage door openers that are temperamental when it gets cold or if it gets slightly wet.

Just a heads up that MyQ closed off their ecosystem to third-party and told their customers to get bent. For that reason, I highly recommend considering other companies.

Based on the reviews, it sounds like a product that will make my life harder and not easier/better

So, there's no way to use the camera without a subscription?

Interest, but looking for opinions from people who have this.

There are pro and cons to any keypad for sure, including this one, but given this is a fairly new product I think it's premature to conclude this is well-built as far as use or temperature endurance goes. This is certainly an attractive price IF you need the "key" feature of assigning individual codes to people. But it's been out for less than a year so whether it can endure Seattle rain or Buffalo blizzards over the years remains to be seen.

Personally, I'm a bit "burnt" by Liftmaster at the moment as they not only abandoned their own $100 My Q HomeKit adapter (yes, it's a brick now if you own one unless you want to do some mucking around) but they also just retracted the API to make My Q HomeKit compatible via Shortcuts or other apps for 3rd parties too. A big middle finger to its customers.

So given that it seems LM/Chamberlain's new business model is if can't make sub $ off a product, like this keypad, it will get discontinued, with support removed.

$40 is enticing but I've decided to stick with my "old school" keypad that doesn't rely on my data going to the My Q servers and also uses regular AA batteries (which I think I have to replace once a year for .75).

To be fair it never opened. Ppl reverse engineered the api used by their mobile app. That api is not designed for background pull so had to pull every few seconds to get instant status.

What MyQ should do is really make an api for 3rd party with notifications, or even better with local integration.

I understand everyone's concerns and share many of them myself but that's why Costco is a game changer. If at any point from now until the sun dies out I decide that this thing isn't worth $40, I will request a return label online and ship it back with extreme prejudice.

I ordered 2 and plan to keep one in the garage on a charger so it's ready to swap out whenever the active one tells me it's low.

Probably because you and many others would be too lazy or without the skill to install a doorbell transformer where traditionally there is no hook up for a 16/24v connection. amirite?

How about I beat your head with the beautiful walnut coffee table I built from scratch.

Chamberlain did have 3rd party access, and they just killed 3rd party API access homebridge [github.com] usage just a few weeks ago.

Statement [chamberlaingroup.com]

They even killed off their homekit physical bridge product.
