I do agree to start with the Hobbit, it's a prequel and will make sure you and your kid like the writing style.
Now, with that out of the way, it really depends on the kid. I read LotR with my 10 year old this past year or so. He loved it. Probably fine for 11 year olds, though I'd recommend reading together - it's a great bonding experience.
