Squiers, including Bullet Mustangs, are MUCH better guitars and actually have a full warranty from Fender. You get 7 days to send back your Firefly and that's it. They won't do a thing for you after that. Also, Fender/Squier necks do not fit on Firefly Strat and Tele bodies, and that is the case for a lot of other parts as well. You're on your own if you ever have a problem. And of course you are really taking your chances if you get something with a set neck as any problem with those will cost you more than the guitar is worth to have fixed. And let's be honest: You are more likely to have a problem with a no-name Chinese guitar like this (Firefly doesn't actually exist; you can't go to their headquarters in the US because it is some dude's home in California!)

Firefly's are attractive for the price. But understand that they are not Squiers and you are gambling that yours will never have a real problem.
"Firefly" doesn't actually exist. It's some dude selling Chinese guitars he has made by a Chibson factory literally out of his house in Southern California. He can't afford to offer free shipping as he himself doesn't get any kind of discount because he has no volume.
Both brands seem to be getting better by the year---and both have delivered some occasional dreadful dogs.

Personally, I would avoid the lowest end of the Squier line. During the pandemic, I bought three Squiers (two Mustang Bullets and a mini Strat) and returned them all: one had a dead output jack, another arrived with a 1 inch chip to its finish, and another had a twisted neck. I bought one Firefly 338 -- spalted maple with a green burst. The guitar arrived perfect. I expected the pickups on the Firefly to sound terrible, but they were fine--not awesome, but good enough to be impressive for the price. It was light, but was thicker and larger than I preferred. I kept it for a year, and traded it at Guitar Center during the pandemic for more than I paid for it. At the time, Firefly Guitars would sell out online. Nowadays, I would not be able to get such a good trade price.

I have played with various Squier Classic Vibes series at Guitar Center and have been impressed. Like the Firefly (or a Harley Benton), it's pretty common for these inexpensive guitars to need a bit of attention and adjustment to get them playing really good.

Speaking of Harley Benton -- cyberweek sales are now ongoing at their online store: thomannmusic.com [thomannmusic.com]

Firefly has added two more guitar styles since the original posting: an explorer-style and a flying v., both $189.91 down from $239.91 ---> https://guitarsgarden.com/collections/ffvx (update: those are now sold out)

FWIW I have a Firefly 338 and I like it. Usual disclaimers - I changed the pickups and did some very light fretwork. The fretboard is beautiful and the neck shape is so nice for me.

Any recommendations for a 7 year old just getting into guitar? A full size is waay too big for her.

You get what you pay for. For the price, a firefly is a great guitar. That being said, it's made of cheap components all around to hit that price point. If you want more stable tuners, real abalone inlays, better wood, thicker veneers, etc, then you'll have to look elsewhere or make the upgrades where possible. For a beginner, it's a great starter guitar. Keep in mind, like others have pointed out, It's a mass produced knock off from china.

I found it much easier to play Ukulele at that age.

Guitar YoutTube influencer---and former guitar store owner---Phil McKnight answered a similar question a few days ago. The specific question he answered was for a five-year old girl. (Link to his YouTube response [youtube.com]) For very young people, he suggests a ukelele or piano. There is also some discussion about it in the thread comments there.

My opinion would be to go to a local guitar store and try some different ones out. You could also go to sweetwater.com and search for guitars by weight. (Example search for solidbodies by weight [sweetwater.com]) One crummy thing though about sweetwater's search is that they often don't take the time to weigh their least expensive guitars. On the other hand, their limited info is better than nothing

My brother took his daughter to Guitar Center and she picked out a smaller scale Mitchell Guitar. They also bought a small guitar amp package and some extra strings.

FF338 used to have a smaller body than a standard ES-335 size Epiphone or Gibson, something between a 335 and 339 (I guess hence the 338 in the name). It also had different (pointier) ears. The new ones have Mickey Mouse ears and say "full size". Does that mean the FF338 body is now the same size as a standard ES-335? I would much prefer the smaller body (but not as small as 339).

Though I like Firefly guitars, I like Squiers too. I noticed that Fender posted some "Doorbusters" on their site within the last hour or two: https://www.fender.com/en-US/blac...orbusters/

Examples (at time this posts):
$120 Bullet Telecasters
$270 Classic Vibe Telecaster

The Firefly 338 I had was quite a bit bigger than my Epiphone Casino Coupe (which is 339 sized).

It's worth noting that the $270 guitar is actually an Esquire, which is a Telecaster without the neck pickup. Still a great price but it might be limiting to people who want more tones out of the guitar.
