I haven't seen this discussed yet. It's been on Reddit.

Citi is basically streamlining their checking accounts but in doing so, it's increasing its monthly balance to avoid fees to $30k or $250 direct deposit.. Right now, my Citi Basic Checking only requires $1500 monthly balance to be free of fees. Fees will be $15/mth.

Considering closing my Citi accounts as it's not my primary bank. I do have a Double Cash card. But I recently received a Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature 2% card. So probably just start banking using my Fidelity accounts. Cash is FDIC insured.

One thing I remember that was nice with Citi ATM was when I was visiting Hong Kong, there were branches everywhere and it made taking out local currency super easy. But I haven't been to HK in years so doesn't benefit now.

It doesn't seem like many people on this forum use Citi checking. In any case, there was an update on how to waive fees. If you do $250+ EDD deposits using Zelle or Venmo/Paypal, then your monthly fees will be waived. EDD = Enhanced direct deposits which includes money transfers through ACH. So apparently a Zelle transfer and/or Venmo/Paypal qualify. I believe this has the additional advantage of not needing to hold $1500 in your account. So I plan to setup a simple automated monthly Zelle transfer from my main checking account to Citi checking to keep this account alive.

Why even bother with Citi? Get a free checking account with just about any online bank or banks like TD or Cap One. There is absolutely no reason to bank with Citibank or any other commercial bank for day to day stuff imo. They have 0 or near 0 interest rates and offer nothing above what other banks give you for free.

My 2 cents.
