One of the reasons I'm still using Plex and not Jellyfin is because of the Plexamp app. It's a pretty polished music app with lots of unique features. I haven't seen an app anywhere near as good for other self-hosted media servers.
Dunno about DVR, but Jellyfin is free and works well. A few rough around the edges things, but not a beast like Plex.

Plex downloads still are non-functional, and it angers me to no end. They rewrote the entire thing, and it still doesn't work. WTF?
I am sticking to Plex from a 'wife approval' standpoint. She can use Plex easily

I've been debating Emby for a long time. I've been a plex user for many years but I'm fed up with live tv/recording bugs. Anyone know if Emby is more seamless?

It's definitely nowhere close to having the polish of a big-tech app like Apple Music or Spotify, etc. If you play music and pause it, after a while the app dies in the background and it doesn't store your playing song / state.

The shuffle algorithm is bad since it keeps repeating some songs more often than others.

Scrolling through folders is not easy since on the iOS/Android apps there's no letter-based scrolling. I was able to enable letter-based scrolling on the desktop browser after some googling but it's gone away again. Sometimes if you tap a folder and go back, it'll go all the way to the top.

99$ is a lot of money for the ability to download music locally. All the rest of the "Premium" features are not features I care for.

I did the monthly sub a year or two ago to try their live TV recording and it kept freezing on me and so I stuck with Plex. Maybe it's better now but at that time it wasn't better than Plex for live TV recording.

Can you clarify what you would like to know? I've been using Emby with a HDHR Prime and Channels DVR for a while, but not sure exactly what the Plex recording bug is

Any bugs? What I experience with plex is specific to recordings. Example: I will record a football game and start watching it half way though. At any giving point, the recording will throw an error and when it restarts it's live. It's spoiled more than just a few games.

By "Plex downloads", do you mean downloading (offline-ing) songs/videos to watch later when you might not have internet access? That works for me -- I had a 4+ hour music playlist that I played at a veterans appreciation dinner we hosted at our church not that long ago and it played without a hitch.

In my experience their DVR is much more stable than Plex's. The bug preventing you from watching while recording has been around for a while and Plex has a history of ignoring even worse issues for years before even acknowledging them. On the other hand Emby staff is usually very responsive on their forums and seems to care a lot more about the stability of their product. The only real downside to their live TV is that most channels can take about 7-10 seconds to tune, but I can live with that. They also have a complete rework of their live TV in the works, though there's no telling when that might actually be released since it was first mentioned in their forums a year ago and they seem to have other priorities at the moment.

Did you ever try posting in their forums to troubleshoot? That's likely something they could have helped you resolve.

We still use Windows Media Center with a HDHomeRun cable card tuner, but WMC support ended years ago and I'm keeping an eye out for what might eventually replace it. Anybody know how the Emby DVR compares to WMC for ease of use?

This. The Plex amp via CarPlay gives you your own High Res streaming service which I prefer over any of the paid ones.

No, Plex worked out of the box so I ended up using that.

Depends who's using it. Originally I used wmc, hdhomerun prime and Xbox 360s as media extenders. I would have kept using them if Comcast didn't slowly switch the encoding on their channels to a format the Xbox didn't support, them dropping guide data was the final nail that made me look into emby and Plex. This was a set up for my mom, she had 3 TVs and paying Comcast for a box for each TV was super expensive. She figured out the Xboxes fine because you can get a remote that takes you straight into media center. I swapped them for rokus to use with Plex and emby. She could kind of figure them both out but it was a lot more difficult and frustrating for her. She would randomly record things she didn't mean to or get lost places. For my mom wmc was way easier.
