Never trust a lifetime license. Much like most nfts, you're not really buying anything more than they're willing to keep providing you.
*You're* a noob if you call other people noobs and can't utilize contractions properly.
You are downloading a frontend - LaunchBox. It is free. It takes all those free emulators you downloaded for all the systems and creates a single "launch" point for all of them with a nice frontend and customizable theme/layout. There are many frontends out there to choose from that do similar things as LB. Everyone has a preference. That's what's great about life, you have choices. So yes you can just download NESticle and run that and play Metroid by clicking in NESticle and choosing the ROM. Then launch SNES9x and load the rom for Metroid in that emulator. Then load Project64 and load the rom and run it from there. OR, load all your emulators and ROMs into LaunchBox or another frontend program and then launch the one frontend and select your system and game you want to play at that moment.

The deal here is for upgrading the free LaunchBox to BigBox which adds features and supports the developers to continue adding new features and plugins to make your gaming rig even better. Nothing additional to load/install with BigBox. The features are in LaunchBox, but activated when you put in your paid license key for BigBox. Every Black Friday and only Black Friday the developer runs this special for up to 50% off the BigBox license, whether it be annual or lifetime, windows or android versions. You could purchase the annual for the discounted cost of $15 today to have all the features enabled. Then if you like it and continue to use it in your gaming rig, next year on BF buy the upgrade for the lifetime license for $30. Your total will still be $45 for the lifetime ($15 for one year then $30 next year to go lifetime).

I understand your concern, and probably referring to the Filmora dilemma that happened recently which was reversed. Quicken/Quickbooks did the same. Always read the fine print, but that is always the legal catch if the company doesn't word it right.

Then again, some businesses care about their customers and don't pull crap like Wondershare and Intuit did.

If you are into Emulation and Retro Gaming, this is a must have. Perfect time to buy if you were interested in Lunchbox/BigBox.

I end up using this over all the other Front ends.

For someone who just does retro stuff (i.e. not Steam / PC games), is there a compelling reason to use this over a free program like EmulationStation Desktop Edition? I'm always happy to look at other options and support developers.

Image-Line has been providing free upgrades for their lifetime license for 25 years, even through a product name change (Fruity Loops to FL Studio). Not all companies are scum... at least not yet. Wink

How well is the multiple controller support in Launch box?

I.e. what I want is to be able to designate controllers to certain games with those games having specific profiles for each of the connected games. Then there are games where it should just accept the standard xinput game pads. I know that's asking a lot but if LaunchBox/Big box can help with this, I'd be sold. I spend way too much time right now tinkering with controllers that it's not family friendly. Each game requires me to configure it properly before playing. Obviously games within one emulator are not a problem but in the world of emulation there are many different emulators and then you have Windows/GoG games that require that special touch.

Does it interface with things like steam and epic games launcher?

I've had a lifetime license from them since 2018 with ZERO issues. It's a great frontend that they continue to put out updates for.

I switched from EmulationStatuon DE to Launchbox. Advantages of LB include an excellent scraper with EmuMovies integration, advanced metadata editor with bulk wizards, and a very feature complete platform/ emulator management system. It also has neat features like displaying ports and similar games to a title, 3d Boxart generation, PDF manual scraping/linking, and a lot of features you would want for an arcade cabinet-esque setup in big box mode

No. This is a frontend--you link in your existing games from launchers like Steam, Epic, Ubisoft, EA, etc.

This essentially compiles all of your games from different launchers and platforms in one place, with a nice looking interface. If you've ever used Plex or something similar, a good way to think of this is Plex for games.
