To each his own, but I would probably buy the amazing Tojiro bread knife ($25), a wider chef knife OR a decent Santoko (like one of the MACs), the terrific Kershaw kitchen shears ($20), skip the paring knife and get a wider, 5" utility knife. I have this Enso 6" utility knife and it is too long and too narrow. Many options for knife blocks, but I prefer under cabinet racks to avoid bacteria in the blocks

It's a great knife. I paid around $100 a couple years ago and still my favorite. I use stone to keep it sharp every few months

To each his/her own. Just my opinion but the chef's knife is used just like the santoku. The bread knife is a handy stand alone. I never had much use for a paring knife. Since it comes with a 5" or so prep knife, I would use that to sub for the paring knife. I like kitchen shears that have molded plastic handles. They are more comfortable. I would look for individual knives you actually use than a set that has a few you may not use but paid for.

Many years back I got a great deal on a similar Henkels German block set (here on SD, of course) - some BBB close out for around $150. Absent one of those deals, i typically recommend a much more scaled back approach, as most of these block sets have lots of redundant knives included.

Your call of course, but you'll come out ahead financially and not really by missing much if you just buy a good chefs knife like this one and then save a bit by going downmarket for any other single knives you need. I use my $20 victornox paring knife just as often as my higher end one and it's great, as an example.

If it were me this is the one I'd pick. Along with the quality, it's gorgeous - would love the look of this hanging in my kitchen on my knife magnet.

Look at the Mercer lines. Mercer dominates the culinary schools. Great quality, remarkable value. These Ensos are excellent, but fragile and more difficult to sharpen. I've had the Victorinox fibrox chef knife for years and never saw the attraction - awkward and does not keep an edge. I use it as a beater knife, albeit vastly less useful than the equivalent commercial line Dexter

How does this compare to some of the knives on the sale at Tokushu? Looking for a nice gift knife. Smilie Thanks!
