Newegg (sold/shipped via Terramaster) too since Amazon is flaky
https://www.newegg.com/terramaste...00AD-00011

I didn't see this posted anywhere, apologies if it has been. I've been looking at DAS units and this one seems decent (esp for the price) if you just need a basic box for some HDDs and don't need (or want) RAID on the box itself.
Would pair nicely with Stablebit DrivePool, OMV, unRaid, etc, where you can have that handle the RAID-esque options to pool drives.
This also seems relatively well made vs it's competitors.

Mfr says:
80TB support (4X20TB)
Up to 410MB/s speeds (read)
USB3.1(Gen1) Type C connector.
Testing with Samsung 850 evo 250GB SSD, the actual data transmission speed is up to 369.5MB/s(write) and 417.8MB/s(read).
All Aluminum-alloy shell and a low-noise fan.

I say:
A small number of reviews mention trouble with certain drives.
A few others mention 1 bay not working.
So.... test all your drives and all the bays too!

Going to eat my own dog food on this one, in for 1.
Doing an HBA flashed to IT mode, but this will be nice to pair with an OptiPlex Micro for backups and/or fooling around with other distros.

Bizarre, it said "$135.99" and "Black Friday price" before but it does show full price for me now.
Hopefully it will come back since it is supposed to be for all of today.
Either that or that 1 I bought was apparently their entire sale stock. =/

I hate Newegg, but it's available there (sold and shipped via TerraMaster) for $135.99 just in case you don't want to wait or Amazon never gets their act together.

D5-300 is $153. Extra bay and two of the drives can be configured in RAID.

Definitely a consideration for some, but I actively don't want RAID on my DAS and there were reports that the 5 bay is potentially less reliable (especially on the bays with RAID ability) than the 4 bay.
I also don't need the 5th bay, but it's certainly nice to have options for only a $20-ish difference.

It's been this price all week. I debated between the Qnap and a few others and decided to go with this. It came a few days ago.

Very solidly made. Very easy to use simply plug it in, and pop your drives in. It included a bunch of screws, I'm assuming perhaps for an SSD drive? The 3.5 inch drives snap in with the included plastic tabs.

The big thing I liked about this was that you can read the drives on anything. The last blurb there on the QNAP description said that you would only be able to read it on that, you couldn't use another device to read it. I wanted to use this for storing backups on, and part of that is being able to easily read them on any other machine if I needed to.

No problems with this.

I actually splurged and ordered a second one. I liked this so much I think I'm going to use this as my main drive for media and storage, and then use the 2nd one to back up it all. Now I just need some deals on HD!

Yeah, a big appeal of a DAS running in individual drive mode is being able to just pull a drive and read it.
Then, depending on how your OS or drive pooling software works, you may be able to pull individual drives and be able to enjoy pooled storage.

Another nice aspect of this is that it's supposed to pass along SMART values on each drive, not every enclosure does that.
And while you would think RAID would be a nice bonus feature, many of us don't need it on the enclosure. If the enclosure doesn't have it, it can't accidentally be activated.

I think $136 for this is a very fair price given the alternatives.

I've been using the 5 bay version for the past year for media and storage and it's been flawless. 4 bay should be equally as good.

Good to hear. I really appreciate all these firsthand experiences as I have one on the way and reading the reviews was tough because, like with almost anything, they are all over the place.

This might sound wild but anyone know if I can use this with a Synology? Like mount the drives within DSM or simply use as an external drive?

This just arrived for me.

The screws are indeed for mounting 2.5" drives.
3.5" drives mount without screws.
