Isn't this always $499?

Yes. They have never been $999 ever, or at least not for the last 5 or more years
At one point they were $399. But now $499-599 is the regular price.

I had a pair. The finish is nice for the money. The sound was fine.

I've got a pair, love them. compare favorably to my LS50's, a little warmer (in a good way, for me...). great price.

For $500 smackaroos, I think I'd rather have nice sound and a fine finish.

Yup, that is pretty much what I was trying to say in a 'sneaky' way.

That said some folks would really prefer the finish. It was actually very nice real wood, book matched veneer. Much better than the images online. Also some folks need the approval of housemates or they themsleves just can't have a generic black or whatever.

I bought 3 pairs of these a few years ago - not too long after they became available at the "discounted" $499 price. Using them in a 5.1 home theater system with one speaker set aside as a spare. *Very* nice finish for the price. Also good sound for the price. Expect a vintage-like laid-back sound signature with a slightly recessed (or not-exaggerated) treble. Better bass output than would be expected from a small speaker - but not so much so that you'd want to skip a subwoofer for HT use (but could do so for most music). Don't skimp on amplifier power; a little 15-watt tube amp Big Grin probably won't do well with these.

If you you like speakers that have a "wow!" sound, like you hear the pianist pressing the pedals or the guitarists fingers dragging over the wound low-E string. These are not that.

If you like speakers to be veiled to the point that it seems there's a thin blanket over them. These are not that.

If you want boomy, bassy, rap speakers. These actually do okay, but that's not their market.

But for GREAT sound that is balanced (won't impress your ears and won't hurt your ears) and have extremely accurate vocals... THESE ARE IT! They are particularly well suited to TV shows since the midrange is accurate and not grating.

Source: I had them for a few years (moved on to Emotiva in the home theater and Dynaudio in the 2-channel setup). My mom currently has a set. My ex-gf currently has a set. They also appreciate the really high end look of these. The Walnut with the grey looks very classy and the size is not a small bookshelf, it's decent. When anyone who isn't a hi-fi addict asks for a all arounder, this is the one I've been recommending for years.

They've been $499 every time I purchased a pair, but considering inflation, this is likely a good deal.

If I had to pick a speaker that made me say "Wow", I'm going with JBL Studio 530, or Vanatoo Transparent One.
