Grammarly is on sale as well. I personally prefer Grammarly, but to be honest, chatgpt can paraphrase and improve your writing way better than these two.
Does ChatGPT kind of kill these services or do they offer what it cannot?

Do you just use their website and paste the whole paper? How does this work?

Grammarly can be installed on a web browser or on Word, so you don't have to copy/paste. so there is one advantage against chatgpt at this point. but I am pretty sure people are developing extensions to use chatgpt more easily

I have used grammarly for a few years on the annual plan now and always refill at half off during black fridays. Its a very useful app but tired of paying yearly fee. Just shelled out for the lifetime prowriting aid plan. Hope it will be comparable in performance to grammarly. Thanks OP.

Anyone used this and have Grammarly for a while? Lifetime pass seems worth it if I use it for next few years.

Edit: after watching a few YT reviews, got the lifetime. Thanks OP.

So, ChatGPT will write stuff for you, but these will help to correct mistakes in your writing and give suggestions. For me personally, it's helped my writing skills because I've been able to learn from my mistakes and the suggestions it makes. I prefer to write everything myself and just use this as an editor.

I would say that's more accurate using ChatGPT and AI, but ProWritingAid and Grammarly can definitely help to improve your writing skills because they function like an editor, or a teacher giving feedback.

All the grammar checking I've ever seen makes people worse writers the moment the software is gone. At best, they blindly follow some of the common edits they receive, no matter how screwed up the results are.

I figured that would be true. Kind of sad really. I'm sure there was a ton of dev work that went into these services and they're relatively new and somewhat dead on arrival

Will I have to keep using it with an India VPN after/forever?

When I use these tools I never "blindly follow" the suggested edits. I incorporate and learn from what I think are good suggestions and reject the rest. I think having that feedback has made me a better writer, with or without the tools.
