Many layers here but in general you do not need a mixer for karaoke. The simplest home setup is to use something like what's pictured here as the "voice" speaker and your home entertainment center as the lyrics display and music play. (Using your home theater speakers for voice can damage them)
To get karaoke versions of songs you An application like KaraFun or YouTube both run very well on an Apple TV.
I started with a jbl party box 100 (very similar to this) and ran the audio output of my laptop to the input on the speaker and then an hdmi cable from laptop to television. To get the music and voice both coming out of the jbl.
It's a deep ocean and I don't want to threadjack any farther but In general yes something like this can make a great home karaoke setup.

Would I need a separate mixer for this or would this create the karaoke version of songs by itself?

Again deep ocean. Something as simple as the 10$ mics at Walmart are "fine" but for a nice wireless set I've personally had good luck with GUDEHOLO from Amazon other brands I know folks have used with success are fifine, phenyx pro.
Essentially all you need is a set with 1/4 trs out and they will plug right into the jbl. If the set has some mixing capabilities or effects like the fifine it can be even more fun.
I bought this two days ago when it was $200. I reached out to Walmart support, and they said they could not match the $20 difference, because it's a special sale. They did give me a $25 promo code.
I'm considering using the $25 code to buy another one at this price, either to pair in stereo or give as a gift. There is a YT review that shows the microphone audio does not pair with other speakers, which is a bummer. Maybe they have fixed it with a software update.

Alternately you could run 3.5mm out of the iPad into the aux in on the speaker to cut out the Bluetooth delay.
