This is far from a "basic certification". While not an easy exam/cert to obtain, it is one of the more direct entires to a six figure job.

And no, I don't have Stockholm syndrome. I've seen half a dozen friends and family land six figure jobs immediately after adding these three letters to their résumé.

However, the recertification process every three years is a scam and nothing more than a money grab. Alas..

While these roles are diminished, the skill set demand still exists. The ability to lead an execution team while managing budget, resources, timelines and risks is still a thing.

PMs, Scrum Masters, Product Owners are getting laid off left and right nowadays. The hype already died out of these BS jobs. Get a real skill. Soft skills can only take you so far.
Ouch, facts hurt my feelings 😭

Is this actually worth anything or is it another one of those University of Phoenix type crap education?

What industry cares about this basic certification?

Thanks!

All industries. It's proof you understand and communicate aspects of a project.

It's a challenging, time consuming test. Arguably more valuable than the average MBA. Having one essentially sets your minimum salary to 100k (as a project manager).

Lmaio getting a PMP as an adult is like getting your drivers' license again. Nobody's paying you $100k just for having either of them.
And double lmao for comparing them to an MBA, I guess maybe an online MBA from a Caribbean university that doesn't actually exist.

The PMP has to my mind become about generating revenue for PMI and credentialism for PMPs. I've seen great PMs without a PMP and terrible ones with it. It never meant more than that you could pass the test, but when the first time fail rate was extremely high, only true PMs tended to go for it.
Many years ago, it was either the only certificate or one of a handful PMI offered. There was no Agile, no Scrum. Now there are so many different options and so many people with the credential that it doesn't seem worth as much. I would say it tend to worth nothing. I also wonder if people value this certification as much in tech as they did ten years ago?

PMI has been incorporating agile concepts over the years. You tend to see tech value scrum for the more agile PM roles. Then again, if you're actually in a PM role you should be able to have your employer cover it.

And you're 100% right, there are killer PMs with zero certs and garbage PMs with alphabet soup in their name. If I had to take a blind stab in fielding candidates, I'd go for a PMP PM vs not; All things being equal.

Fortunately the cert hasn't been diluted into oblivion like six sigma.

Its valuable to have your PMP, but the test has nothing to do w/ real life principles of actual projects. Memorize material, pass exam, and forget 90% of it.
