Anyone know if these can do ash?

I do not recommend regular shop vac for ash. If you decide to go that route, I used to use a bag plus a canister filter. You'll still get ash blowing out of the exhaust but it'll be bearable.
I use the 4 Gallon 5.0 Peak HP Ridgid with a bag and VF6000 filter to vacuum a (cold ash) pellet stove. No smoke smell or ash comes out the exhaust. Not sure if this this vacuum offers a similar combination. If not, I'd go with the ridgid.

Never thought to use a vac to take the ash out of my pellet stove…… but admittedly it produces so little that it only needs to be emptied maybe every 10-14 days. Amazing how efficiently the pellets burn vs wood (had a wood stove for over 10 years prior to the pellet stove - if I could get 3-4 days between cleanings that was good)

Yes, it's amazing how little ash is left after a 40lb bag. To clarify, the ash goes into a removable pan that is emptied once a week. I use the vac to clean out the stove about once a
month, so it might not be cost efficient for a wood stove with a lot of ash.

You have a recommendation for woodworking/saw dust/ec.

I'd get one that has hepa filter option. I found the best value to be rigid.

Which separator did you go with?

I got the dustopper at home Depot. I was going to try to make my own, but this comes with everything you need and is more compact.

Your friend has shared a link to a Home Depot product they think you would be interested in seeing.

I made a little frame using PVC and some plywood to put the bucket/separator on top of the shop vac so it moves easier.

No. You need one with special filter. Ashes can become combustible the next day.

Also dedicated ash vacuum has no plastic parts.
