I grew up listening to these and they really are well done from a production standpoint. The voice acting was always great along with the stories, sound effects, etc. so had to share it 😊
Since moving to LA I've even run into Katie Leigh and Jess Harnell haha (both are wonderful people)

Cannot suggest this enough! What a great way to share time with your family without constantly having their face staring at a screen.

Ok now I'm jelly. I went to Colorado Springs once, passed by Focus on the Family and they were closed 😂

Adventures in Odyssey is a great series for any age. Perfect for short car trips or longer road trips. Hands-down a favorite for everyone in our family.

The hate comes from the fact that Focus on the Family is a well-funded fundamentalist organization that is hugely anti-LGBT, endorsing conversion therapy long after even other Christian organizations stopped and apologized for the harm they did. They've said truly awful things about LGBT people and demonized them. The founder, James Dobson, was a huge proponent of violent corporal punishment in his books and influenced a generation of evangelical parents, including my own, to use abusive discipline practices.

I don't remember anything bad about Adventures in Odyssey specifically, but let's not assume that people don't have valid reasons for disliking Focus on the Family.

Agreed the programs teach great lessons through well produced content. Something that fosters real discussion and family time. I think the stories and lessons are great for all ages. There's too much negativity in media, it's nice to have something wholesome that the whole family can enjoy and relate to.

I too grew up listening to this (but not in the abusive discipline family thankfully! ) and have very fond memories of this show, and all the other shows that came on after (zoobilie zoo?). This was our "Saturday morning cartoons" since we were not allowed to watch much tv. I think they did a good job of not pushing propaganda in these shows, and if they did, it was incredibly subtle. The only episode I remember was the "selpurcs" (scruples backward), and that Mr. Whitt was a crazy inventor.

I think this goes back to the argument, like the art, hate the artist (Tom Cruise=Scientologist, Bill Cosby=Whatever he is etc...). And I honestly do not know where I stand on this particular show.
Anyway, sorry you experienced that growing up and I hope you were able to escape and grow from it !

Yeah, to be fair, I do actually have fond memories of listening to this show and enjoyed the stories as well. I'd have to go back and listen as an adult to be sure, but I don't really remember anything problematic with Odyssey in particular. So, my comments were more directed toward the people criticizing/dismissing anyone who had a problem with Focus on the Family specifically.

Thanks for the kind words. It took me a while to deconstruct, but I finally did in my mid-20s.

I didn't listen to this much as a kid but my wife introduced it to me when our kids were young and I was surprised at how good it is. We managed to finish buying all the CDs around the time that everything went online of course, now the CDs are just sitting in a box and we subscribe to their streaming service. The thought of buying the individual episodes in a new format is making me a little sick 😩
