Based on Reddit posts I assume the end of Feb/beginning of March is the best time to go? Looking at a 14-day trip in total from leaving/landing back at LAX. Is that enough time for both islands?

3 weeks at best for optimal experience, broadly speaking

I'd suggest spending most of your time on one island. We did a three days on the north island (Piha beach, Hobbiton and Nikau Caves) then flew from Auckland to Christchurch and spent about two weeks exploring the south island. We flew out of Queenstown after driving to Milford sound.

The advice I've given friends who have visited has been to largely skip Auckland. There's things to see and do, of course, but it's like most other large cities.

Just got back from a week in NZ, with most spent on South Island. Queenstown was a great home base, and also did a few nights in Mt Cook national park. I had originally thought we'd spend more time in/around Auckland, but I agree with Wolverine after spending 2 nights in Auckland that I would have rather spent 1-2 more nights in South Island.

I've heard Wellington is great. We had only two weeks on the south island, so I had to cut out a lot that I would have loved to do. Rakaia Gorge, Lake Tekapo, Mt. Cook Village, Wanaka, Arrowtown, Queenstown, Te Anau, and Milford Sound are some of the places we fit in on the South Island. Loved it all.

Just got back from the South Island as well. Got out of Aukland asap to Christchurch and drove through Lake Topeka and Spent most of our time around Mt Cook at the Hermitage. Great base of operations for us. We only were in country a week so didn't make it south to Milford but maybe next time. Helicopter to the glacier, hooker trail, glaciers, ice bergs, ice caves were amazing. It's just an amazing place.

As far as LAX to Australia I also did this trip on Fiji air and stopped over for 4 days in Fiji first before continuing to Brisbane. Rented a car and drove the coast over a week to Sydney and flew back from Sydney. Got to see much of the coast across several cities and beach towns, highly recommended. Could have used a few more weeks to hang out longer.

Fiji had a great business class sale last year. Any sign of that?
