I have the older DVD box set, so I'm wondering if it's worth the upgrade to Blu-ray. I understand it would take up much less shelf space and it's better picture quality, but it was filmed in the 70's, so does that really matter? Is there any bonus content that wasn't in the 14 disc DVD set? If so, is it worth buying again? I'll see what Blu-ray.com says, but I would like to hear what you think.

Shrubberies!

Just had to say it. It depends on the original source material. If it was taped, probably not. Ditto for how those originals were stored. But even if it was taped, if it has been remastered properly it still could be worth it.

Hidef digest is a good place to start, their reviews are usually pretty thorough, though I don't buy many blu-rays these days. Smilie

wondering the same thing - have older dvd set, last time i wanted to watch i just played it off of netflix.

i'm doubting that there's much extra here as they've done SO many python specials and there's almost nothing worth rewatching (in my opinion) outside of the known shows and movies

YouTube has a couple rips from this set that are night and day from the DVD releases. I'm not positive but I think the Netflix version is probably from here

In addition to hidef digest, if you just follow the link above you'll end up at this review of the actual discs:

it looks to be a very good transfer.

When you think about it, there is quite a large (and monied) demographic that is a market for this nonsense.

As someone who has watched Python since the '70s and just about every release over the years, I can assure you the new restored episodes are leaps and bounds in front of any previous transfer. They're absolutely worth it. They look spectacular.

In to replace my dvds. Sounds like a great transfer. Also from what I'm reading the Netflix ones are not from this transfer.

It's a superb transfer. They went back to the original 576i broadcast master tapes and did a fresh transfer and upscale. Where available (mainly the animations) they rescanned the original 16mm film. Here's Terry Gilliam watching and commenting on the remastering with one of the restoring team: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSoNNtlQqDs

This set was $49.99 as a lightning deal in June of 2021, I don't think it's been much cheaper since.

Any word on a boxset streaming version? Apple has each of the 4 seasons for $10 each, but they are the SD version that won't get upgraded to HD/4k.
