As a police officer, I love radar detectors because people that have them tend to drive within reason. That being said, almost no departments use handheld radars anymore, it's either moving radar that is almost always on but can be set to stationary mode or handheld infrared lasers, or lidar, such as the Pro Laser Iv. These units will give you warning for moving radar but they won't for lidar. The cone for the laser is 3 feet at 1500 feet, and it doesn't bounce around down the road like radar does. The return speed is less than a second and we aim it at your grill area, not your windshield. I may shoot a laser at you and it doesn't even register on your detector.
That being said, people with detectors tend to be safer drivers, definitely driving slightly above the speed limit but not below the speed limit which is statistically more dangerous to a large extent. This deal seems good and the brand is reliable.
Anyone who wants the R3 over the R4 is crazy. I own both and the R3 has way more false alerts than the R4. I love the more advanced warning of the R4 over the R3.

I just bought the R8 before seeing this. After reading every legit test/review I could find, i bought the R8, but this R4 price is the best bang for buck on an RD. Period. Paying a crazy premium for the arrows...
Selling knife is illegal, but this is legal, right?
Can someone tell me one legal usage case for this product, please?
All uses for this product are legal except in Virginia and Washington DC. Just because you feel something should be illegal in your head, doesn't mean that it is.

Arrows are definitely nice to have if it's within the price of what you want to spend.
Sorry a stupid question. I really need this, but am I allowed to put it on by law? In some state, if any accident happens, am I going to be in trouble when police see it?
Where do you live? You are legally allowed to have this except in Virginia and DC (and military bases).
You won't have any issues, it is not an admission of guilt to have a radar detector.
No this has a laser sensor but that is mainly a gimmick. Laser is very narrow so if you get hit the detector is probably not going to see it and even if it sees it it'll be too late for you to slow down as the cop will already have your speed.
With that being said it is very good for radar and you couple it with Waze you should be good with most threats since laser has to be stationary so hopefully someone saw the cop and reported them on Waze.
If there is a lot of laser use in your area then I would look into ALP. Which is a laser jammer, it actually doesn't let the cop get a reading. But it is expensive $1200+
Is this even worth using in NYC or will it be going off on everything?
Haven't driven there but honestly if you tweak the settings enough over a period of time as you are learning what threats are in your area you can usually get it to be very quiet.

TBH, I would rather have the R3. I have an R4 and it alerts at such long ranges that the constant beeping is just annoying. It's literally beeping for well over a mile. I know you can hit mute, but I would rather be alerted slightly later. I do not like muting because we do not know if the threat has moved later on. Improving on distance is no longer an improvement.

Also ymmv but laser jammers are almost always illegal.
The R7 gives you the arrows but you lose other functionality like Bluetooth and newerv technology sensors
