For $20 less, you can get a 7700x with a motherboard and 32GB DDR5 ram:

https://www.microcenter.com/produ...uild-combo

Even though it has half the cores, the 7700x is quite a bit faster in single-core performance, and a bit faster in multi-core.

Seems like a much better deal.

great info, thanks for posting

myself, I just invested in another 64GB of DDR4.. (and I want those cores, I think.. for Blender simulations...)

Faster in multicore with just half the cores?

I'm think they are wrong. I remember comparing my 7700X to a 5900X and it was a bit faster in single core, and slightly slower in multicore. No way this is faster in threaded applications than a 5950X.

It's not faster multi-core.

I currently have a 6-core 1600AF, so an 8-core just doesn't seem like that much of an upgrade for me. I know it is, just doesn't feel that way. Plus, I do a lot of virtualization, so...MOAR CORE!

The 5950X is about 40% faster than the 7700X in heavily multithreaded situations. However, I don't disagree that the new generation of processors is probably better for most people not already locked into AM4 due to the 30% single-core uplift.

7700X is only going to be slower if you're doing something that utilizes 10+ cores. My knowledge might be outdated here but the majority of games aren't able to do that, so it would be more useful for something like video encoding for example (but then wouldn't you want to use a GPU for that?).

Bought this for proxmox server this past summer. Good processor if you want a beefy server with plenty of cores to run several VMs and still have resources left over to run more stuff.

All of the regular 5xxx line have too low cache memories for the types of workloads needed under win 11... as it gets increasingly bloated. Also ddr5 needs to work on getting that latency down, if gddr7 is very low latency so can ddr5 be very low latency.
