Do you want same performance or same specs. The reason I say this is because a desktop graphics card will ALWAYS be more powerful than a laptop graphics card of the same nomenclature. For example, a laptop 4090 is roughly somewhere in the desktop 4070ti/3090/3090ti in terms of performance. It has always been that way since the first laptop gpu (I've been computer gaming since the 90s).

I've seen 4070ti's dip into the low $700s via Zip/Newegg. If your main purpose is gaming, then a 7800x3d as your cpu is probably your best bet. I'm too lazy to look up but I'd guess you could probably build one for around $1300-$1400 without a monitor.

Now if you wanted exact specs, a desktop 4090 in today's market is almost $2 g's alone and are way over msrp. With a desktop 13900K/motherboard and the rest of the miscellaneous items, you're probably staring at close to $3 g's. Granted, you'll smoke this laptop in gaming.

So in short, if you want equivalent performance, you'll save a pretty penny building a desktop. Of course, that means you can't take it with you to the library, on a plane, in a hotel room etc etc.

Personally, I think the most versatile combination is a desktop + an ultrabook.

This isn't just a video card lol. It's the best laptop out there. Doesn't sound like you are the target market. Maybe check into chromebooks.

Very much so. The Legion Slim chassis is closer to the Gen 7 that we all loved.

Thanks a lot for the detailed response!
I actually was thinking of this for machine learning and I think the GPU memory plays a big factor. Since it seems the laptop 4090 has more memory than 4070ti, it may be better to go for the laptop 4090 especially that it has more AI cores.
Again, thanks! I didn't consider desktop vs laptop GPU performance before. I'll need to think about it more.
Not sure about that since the laptop 4090 is only 16GB of memory vs the desktop version is 24GB. It's going to limit those serious about AI transformers and most people working on ML are. Either way, using home machines are going to be limiting in some ways which is why most still work off of more powerful cloud servers. It will still be useful for some types of prototyping and non-transformer work if you don't want to have to get online or need to be localized for some reason.

It's wider but flatter than the old xbox 360 brick. It's big but manageable.

It is still working.. I just used it 2 minutes ago. This is false information.
it is not false information, just because it works for you it does not mean it works for everyone, other users are reporting the same issue.

Bought just now, coupon still works. Chase Freedom portal says coupon doesn't expire until the 17th but my experience with many Lenovo coupons is that they will expire earlier if a lot of people use them or the product can just run out of stock. Don't forget you can Shop Through Chase Freedom credit card portal for 2% CB, or pay with paypal to get 5% up to 75$ this quarter if you haven't maxed it. Don't forget to use an ID.me discount (nursing/student/teacher) for another 5%. Total $2,264 for me with ID.me discount.

Easy to add a 2TB drive for $150 since it has a second m.2 slot. ETA for me is Dec 29 - Tue. Jan 02.

Is it perfect? No, but im pretty happy with the value and good combo of features.

Raccoon tin (sounds like that, I don't think we can share the name on here) browser extension was 10% with Lenovo.

For those debating desktop vs laptop Jarrod's tech has a YouTube video on it. It's not even close. Portability vs performance. I need portability so I take a painful hit on performance. If you don't need portability 100% buy a desktop. The only person that can decide that is you.

That is a bummer about planes. I tried my old Legion on a plane to Vietnam. Suchhhhh a bummer when the plug just would not work at all. -Maybe if you had a 100w usb c charger it would give you at least some juice?

There coming out with refreshes on the gpu's next year so anything below 4090 should wait. Nothing above 4090 planned so top end buyers are safe....for now.

There's something I want to say when it comes to gaming pc's both desktop and laptop. There are generally 2 trains of thought when it comes to spending your money. Either buy just enough to meet your needs and upgrade asap when new stuff comes out or go top end and keep it for 5+ years. I personally think that if your going to blow several grand you might as well get a great experience instead of scraping the bottom barrel and have buyers remorse.

Wasn't there a generation where the laptop and desktop GPUs were the same? I think it was the 20XX gen where they were the same chip, and everyone got excited because we thought it would be like that for the future, but alas...

Sounds like it. However, people will come crawling on their knees to buy it which will continue to reinforce Lenovo to cheapen future models.. frustrating.
The sad thing is the people who don't care about the cost cutting don't realize that by going to a plastic deck, their palms will soon discolor the top of the chassis near the trackpad. That's why I've always hated plastic tops on laptops. I guess if it's always plugged in with an external keyboard it doesn't matter, but why would you get a gaming laptop then. One way to mitigate this is to get a wrap, but I'm not a fan of those.
