I've seen 4070ti's dip into the low $700s via Zip/Newegg. If your main purpose is gaming, then a 7800x3d as your cpu is probably your best bet. I'm too lazy to look up but I'd guess you could probably build one for around $1300-$1400 without a monitor.
Now if you wanted exact specs, a desktop 4090 in today's market is almost $2 g's alone and are way over msrp. With a desktop 13900K/motherboard and the rest of the miscellaneous items, you're probably staring at close to $3 g's. Granted, you'll smoke this laptop in gaming.
So in short, if you want equivalent performance, you'll save a pretty penny building a desktop. Of course, that means you can't take it with you to the library, on a plane, in a hotel room etc etc.
Personally, I think the most versatile combination is a desktop + an ultrabook.

Would love to get this but fear it's the same story. Although with a 4090 I can play hooked to 4k still good to have a nice integrated screen.

As far as I'm aware, there wasn't. I just checked it up and a 2080 Super laptop was similar to a 2070 Super desktop. That said, the amount of power in these laptops is staggering. My first laptop with a discrete graphics was a Toshiba I bought in 2003. Gaming laptops weren't a thing up to that point. It was a revelation that I could play that old Final Fantasy VI Online on the go. Despite that, it was still massive drop off from my desktop at the time.
Contrast that to today where gaming on my laptop with a 3070 Ti vs my desktop with a 3080. The 3070 Ti is driving a 2560x1440 panel while the desktop is pushing a 3440x1440. To tell yah the truth, in practice the experience on both is nearly identical. I gave up the FPS race a long time ago. If it plays well to me, I'm good

do you mean for the custom built but without the 4090 upgrade, or the 82WQ0002US model that is already spec'd with a 4080?
