Do you want same performance or same specs. The reason I say this is because a desktop graphics card will ALWAYS be more powerful than a laptop graphics card of the same nomenclature. For example, a laptop 4090 is roughly somewhere in the desktop 4070ti/3090/3090ti in terms of performance. It has always been that way since the first laptop gpu (I've been computer gaming since the 90s).

I've seen 4070ti's dip into the low $700s via Zip/Newegg. If your main purpose is gaming, then a 7800x3d as your cpu is probably your best bet. I'm too lazy to look up but I'd guess you could probably build one for around $1300-$1400 without a monitor.

Now if you wanted exact specs, a desktop 4090 in today's market is almost $2 g's alone and are way over msrp. With a desktop 13900K/motherboard and the rest of the miscellaneous items, you're probably staring at close to $3 g's. Granted, you'll smoke this laptop in gaming.

So in short, if you want equivalent performance, you'll save a pretty penny building a desktop. Of course, that means you can't take it with you to the library, on a plane, in a hotel room etc etc.

Personally, I think the most versatile combination is a desktop + an ultrabook.

This isn't just a video card lol. It's the best laptop out there. Doesn't sound like you are the target market. Maybe check into chromebooks.

Very much so. The Legion Slim chassis is closer to the Gen 7 that we all loved.

Not sure about that since the laptop 4090 is only 16GB of memory vs the desktop version is 24GB. It's going to limit those serious about AI transformers and most people working on ML are. Either way, using home machines are going to be limiting in some ways which is why most still work off of more powerful cloud servers. It will still be useful for some types of prototyping and non-transformer work if you don't want to have to get online or need to be localized for some reason.
Agreed, but as @kevinh mentioned, and I missed earlier, 3090 is a good alternative. It's 24gb, and can be found used for around 700$ in my region. It'll be very good for trying out things before sending some jobs to the cloud.

How's the screen compared to 2021 legion 5 pro? The one thing I find dissatisfied on it. It looks super washed out compared to a ROG Zyph, have to turn on max brightness for me to enjoy the colors.

Would love to get this but fear it's the same story. Although with a 4090 I can play hooked to 4k still good to have a nice integrated screen.

Wasn't there a generation where the laptop and desktop GPUs were the same? I think it was the 20XX gen where they were the same chip, and everyone got excited because we thought it would be like that for the future, but alas...

As far as I'm aware, there wasn't. I just checked it up and a 2080 Super laptop was similar to a 2070 Super desktop. That said, the amount of power in these laptops is staggering. My first laptop with a discrete graphics was a Toshiba I bought in 2003. Gaming laptops weren't a thing up to that point. It was a revelation that I could play that old Final Fantasy VI Online on the go. Despite that, it was still massive drop off from my desktop at the time.

Contrast that to today where gaming on my laptop with a 3070 Ti vs my desktop with a 3080. The 3070 Ti is driving a 2560x1440 panel while the desktop is pushing a 3440x1440. To tell yah the truth, in practice the experience on both is nearly identical. I gave up the FPS race a long time ago. If it plays well to me, I'm good Smilie

This is a nice laptop. I picked up a 7i slim though for $1600+tax. It has a 4070 and 16GB. Only reason I went with the slim is because it is just a tad thinner and I want to use it for traveling mostly. This laptop works great too. If you're a heavy gamer that travels then this laptop is good. If you don't travel at all then there are better performing 4090 laptops out there. This is good for those traveling.

Ugh, I bought the ASUS Rog Strix G18 on Black Friday for $2200 after tax (i9-13980hx + 4080). I love the metal chassis and the feel and quality of the build/screen…but the 18"+ size of it is annoying. Would it be worth it to return and get this traditionally off a marginally worse CPU for a marginally better GPU with a cheaper overall build? Everyone seems to love the legion and I have to admit, the size of the G18 is kind of annoying to me.

interesting, not working for me

do you mean for the custom built but without the 4090 upgrade, or the 82WQ0002US model that is already spec'd with a 4080?
