Do you want same performance or same specs. The reason I say this is because a desktop graphics card will ALWAYS be more powerful than a laptop graphics card of the same nomenclature. For example, a laptop 4090 is roughly somewhere in the desktop 4070ti/3090/3090ti in terms of performance. It has always been that way since the first laptop gpu (I've been computer gaming since the 90s).

I've seen 4070ti's dip into the low $700s via Zip/Newegg. If your main purpose is gaming, then a 7800x3d as your cpu is probably your best bet. I'm too lazy to look up but I'd guess you could probably build one for around $1300-$1400 without a monitor.

Now if you wanted exact specs, a desktop 4090 in today's market is almost $2 g's alone and are way over msrp. With a desktop 13900K/motherboard and the rest of the miscellaneous items, you're probably staring at close to $3 g's. Granted, you'll smoke this laptop in gaming.

So in short, if you want equivalent performance, you'll save a pretty penny building a desktop. Of course, that means you can't take it with you to the library, on a plane, in a hotel room etc etc.

Personally, I think the most versatile combination is a desktop + an ultrabook.

This isn't just a video card lol. It's the best laptop out there. Doesn't sound like you are the target market. Maybe check into chromebooks.

Very much so. The Legion Slim chassis is closer to the Gen 7 that we all loved.

Are these the Legion 7's where Lenovo did some major cost cutting like going from a metal to a plastic chassis and glass to plastic trackpad to make room for the overpriced Legion 9's?

Nice! I added 1TB SSD. Still better than the earlier B&H deal and comes with support. Pulled the trigger.

Pulled the trigger a day ago with this. Don't forget to use 10% with the chrome add on that's purple. Health care worker, military, elderly or teacher is another $150 or so. I added the extra ram and 2nd SSD

I see 2% on the chrome purple extension. How did you get 10%?

Would building a desktop PC with the same specs be more cost effective ? If so, by how much?

I got the 4080 version a week ago. It's okay. You definitely see and feel the plastic. I would have liked a metal build for something that's heavy that is supposed to be moved around. Like the bottom having some flex when you hold it, supporting the heavy components inside, or the slight flex when moving the hinge. The top lid is metal though, so that's good.

Thanks a lot for the detailed response!
I actually was thinking of this for machine learning and I think the GPU memory plays a big factor. Since it seems the laptop 4090 has more memory than 4070ti, it may be better to go for the laptop 4090 especially that it has more AI cores.
Again, thanks! I didn't consider desktop vs laptop GPU performance before. I'll need to think about it more.

I'm happy with my $1899 version with 4080 from B&H... Can't see paying 25% more money for 10% more performance...

Ah, so you need gobs of gpu memory. Have you considered a used 3090? At least in my local market (So Cal), I've seen a few for $600-ish.
