PROs:
This is th best value laptop you can find with the M3 lineup:
This is a great deal, the new air with m3 will probably start at $1,100. Add 512 GB SSD and 16 GB ram will become $1,500. The M3 pro starts at $2k, I never seen it cheaper than $1,800.
Cons:
Compared to M3 pro models, it is weaker in terms of performance, there is one fewer usb-c port, no new black color, and supports only one external monitor.

EDIT - also the $1749 M3 Pro chip version supports 2 external displays vs. one. Pretty good value for the extra $130 IMO.
Also I have a MacBook 14" M1. The original one they came out with. Is this chip better?
I paid I think 1900 or 2K for mine at the time. 512gb 16gb
I bought one for $1500 + $47 shipping to Alaska. Then I saw a mint 16" Macbook M2 Pro with Applecare on eBay for $1650. I ended up with two laptops at my house. I prefer the bigger one for now. The 14" M3 is still sitting in factory wrapping in the corner of my room. It has been on Facebook Marketplace at $1550 for a week but no one has wanted it. Do any of you want to buy it for $1500 + shipping? Direct message me and we will work it out. You can do PayPal for buyer protection or anything other assurances you need. It is brand new, unopened though!
The M1/M2 Mac minis do have TB4, because they don't have to commit one of the displays to an internal screen.

Other than buying a refurb M1 pro, this is the lowest entry price for the 14" Liquid Retina XDR screen, speakers, and pro-ports on a Macbook. (Other than a $1450 8GB ram M3 model at Best Buy). I don't want to spend more than $1000 bucks on two year old tech, period. So I purchased the 16gb M3.
There is an awesomer M3 Pro laptop waiting at $1850, I know. It could play more advanced games and complete some advanced tasks faster. For me, the main consideration was gaming. I had to consider that the $350 difference between this 16gb M3 and the M3 pro laptop could buy a Ps5 or Xbox with the deals right now. So that's what I did. In my logic, for my uses, my $1850 went further by buying a next gen gaming system and a less capable Macbook.
So it makes sense that, on a thread talking about a significant deal that brings the 16GB version of this machine down to $100 LESS than the 8GB model, everyone thinks its a great machine. Because it objectively IS. At this price point.

Seems like the MacBook Pro M3 vanilla has better single and multicore performance, but the MacBook Pro M1 Pro has better opencl and metal performance.

Upgrading from a 2017 MacBook with similar specs of 16GB RAM/512 SSD where I paid ~$2,500 for it back then. It also died on me in 2020 which taught me a lesson on never overpaying for the Apple Tax, luckily I was able to get it replaced due to the 13-inch MacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Program on Apple's Service Program list but lesson learned and have my own built PC now. Just needed a laptop for remote purposes, also rocking an LG C2 in my current desk setup so don't have a problem with the 1 display problem folks have brought up.
I'm also from Florida where there is a Tax Free Holiday currently going on for laptops under $1500, making this extra slick by it only costing me $1499 total. Thanks OP! Cheers to this laptop hopefully lasting me the next 6 years!
