You can do a *lot* worse for $100. Husky is a very decent homeowner brand.

Let's be clear -- it's generally not what a mechanic in a shop would use 8hrs+ a day, 5+ days a week. But for casual, home use -- it'll last many, many years before you feel the need to upgrade (if at all).

It has a lifetime warranty (just take any failed part back to Home Depot and they'll exchange it on the spot), which is less hassle than even Craftsman anymore. Trying to get Lowes or Ace to handle Craftsman exchanges is an exercise in frustration.

You'll of course would want to supplement this kit with other tools as you progress through projects, but for a starting point, it's an excellent assortment that'll cover most of the commonly used sizes.

The best parts are the selection of regular AND deep well sockets. Three ratchets are very nice.

The so-so is the selection of combination wrenches -- I feel there could be more, but those included cover the normal mechanic needs.

The worst part are the allen wrenches and the little screwdriver bits, though I'm spoiled. I use excellent allen & torx wrenches on a daily basis -- so seeing these low-grade ones just makes me shiver at rounding a fastener. And furthermore, I have an irrational disgust for those little magnetic screwdriver bits. They're next to useless -- I prefer hex locking bits, as there's no chance of losing them due to the bit biting to the fastener as you pull away.

I have been pleasantly surprised on how well Husky ratchets and sockets do compared to other brands in tests.

Is this better than the 270 piece that comes in the box?

The DeWalt set from eBay was a much better deal, as it also included trays for your tool chest. This socket tray is a little bit overloaded IMO. That's a dizzying amount of sockets in one place. Decent deal, and much easier warranty replacement vs DeWalt. If you just need a basic set for the truck, get one with a blow molded case. $34 buys a nice 1/4" and 3/8" Hart set from Walmart. The $20 1/4" Kobalt set is cheap, but that ratchet is tiny.

I would pass on this because it comes with 12 point sockets.

The recent dewalt mechanics set was pretty good at 60$ and I know there is another decent 192 piece dewalt tool for around 130-150$.

The 192 set is great just heavy from all the sockets no fillers. I haven't used Husky in 10 years but when I did in the past the ratchets would crap out on me when needing to get off a stubborn bolt on an older vehicle. I just stayed away since

yeah I just found out how heavy those DEWALT mechanics sets are. I put the recent 226 tool piece deal in a tough box and its heavy as hell. im a little scared I might eventually hurt my back trying to get it in and out of my SUV.

I'm so on the fence about keeping the Jobsmart 253pc as it has like 120+ filler bits. Is this much more worth it or should I get the DeWalt from eBay?

My plastic case on my old, 101 piece, craftsman socket set is falling apart and this is actually cheaper to get a whole new set then to find a new toolbox!

My $0.02 … I bought this a while ago, one of the many other times this deal was offered thinking it would be a good set to have around as an extra when I go to the race track. But it's just missing too many items, and the box itself is laid out very poorly and inefficiently which matters when you have to pack things. Ultimately, I returned my set. For very light use and if you don't mind that it takes up twice as much space as it should, this is a deal, and I personally like the husky brand, especially with the warranty and easy replacement. But if you do any significant work on vehicles, you'll be frustrated when you have to go out and get another set of sockets or wrenches because this one didn't have what you needed.

Yes, by quite a margin. The retail MSRPs and savings amount would not indicate so but as a functional set this one is one of the most complete starters I've seen. This one really does a great job at trading the bit count for actual sockets and comes with a functional range of both 6 and 12pt sockets across both SAE and Metric and in various drive sizes. It is quite understated. Also the fact the deep socket orientation is vertical instead of horizontal is a lesson most home gamers don't realize until after the fact.

I'm actually really impressed with this set, go Husky. Would be sweet if they included ratcheting wrenches as well but for the $100 price if you have been eyeing a starter set this is the one to pull the trigger on.

Note it doesn't come with the full case but you wouldn't likely use that anyway really. The ability to bring your entire tray of sockets to your project in one shot will offer most far more functional utility.

This is cool to see, I hope the starter kits start moving in this direction.

If you had any common sense, you wouldn't be using a ratchet to break loose stubborn bolts. Breaker bars are the proper tool for the job...Amateurs like yourself giggles me.
