They are pretty much considered on par with anything in mid-tier headphones ($150-300). In that segment you can get different to suit your individual sound preference, but there isn't anything that is just leaps and bounds better on the average. There will always be someone that just has to disagree, but this is general consensus.

AKG K702's are considered to have among the widest soundstage of any headphone, but they have a slightly boosted midrange. I personally find that boost ideal for acoustic guitar, classical, synth pads, and soft jazz-like music. Bass is a little weak to my ears even boosted with an iFi amp with x-bass. The 400se is said to have an average soundstage and a small dip in mids ofter 1KHz. The AKG K702 is a little controversial. Some love it; some don't. It's a sizzling, airy headphone if I had to describe it in a couple words.

The Sennheiser 6XX has a more flat midrange whereas the Hifiman headphones usually have a dip after about 1000Hz. The soundstage on the 6XX is considered by some to be below average while the 400se represents the average. Neither is very controversial. Both have a sound most people enjoy. The Hifiman build quality is often maligned; the Sennheiser build quality is most often praised.

In short, the 400se is considered to be a very good sounding headphone. Build quality is questionable historically, but some think it is worked out. Open backs are more comfortable for listening for longer periods, and they have the potential to have wider sounding soundstages where it sounds like things are happening outside of your head, but they usually lack bass heavy tone that you might be accustomed to from closed back headphones.

I have a pair - have owned for about two years - flawless and nice. I reach for my Beyerdynamic Amiron's the most nowadays so, this may tell you what I like in headphones. I have a Antique Sounds HB-1 hybrid headphone amplifier (use 6BQ5 tubes) and a few other solid state amps. One needs to have a decent amp to enjoy these.

Does B-stock mean it was a return, or does it mean they have manufacturing defects?

I can only speak to my HE4xx, which I understand to be very similar to these, except with a slightly different sound signature. I don't find the earpads or headband to be uncomfortable when listening at the computer for 3 hours or so, so I think it just depends on the person.

The most important thing to understand about the HE4xx is that they take EQ very well. I assume these 400se's would be the same. Don't even worry about the sound signature, because all it does is serve as a starting point to EQ them however you like. I use PeaceEQ with the Oratory1990 profile, slightly tweaked. With this EQ and a nice DAC/AMP, it's just as good as any of the best sounding headphone setups I've ever heard. I frequent the big audio shows, and sit and listen to everything I can get my hands on. I've never heard anything that could replace these, not even in the multi-thousand dollar range. Yes, that could be because my ears aren't resolving enough to hear the differences, but I've been into audiophile audio for several decades and these are close enough to perfect to me.

How comfortable are these for extended listening WFH? The HD6xx are not super comfortable for me, too much clamping. For a little more than $50 bucks, these are tempting.

I got the HIFIMAN HE4xx from Drop and they were SO uncomfortable - Primarily the scratchiness of the earpads. If you pick these up prepare to replace the earpads.

Also, as these are 32 ohm, you'll most likely want some type of amp to drive them. I think at this point it might not be *necessary*, but with planars you'll want it anyhow.
The input impedance of a headphone (32 ohm in this case) is not indicative of whether an amp is needed or not. The sensitivity is the number you use to determine if you to determine if you need an amp. The sensitivity here is 91 db which is average/below average so I'd suggest buy the headphone first then decide later if its not loud enough then you can get an amp.
The input impedance only matters IF you need an amp. Once you determined you need an amp, then you should use the "Rule of 8" to select an amp that has an outout impedance which is 1/8 or less of the input impedance of the headphone generally speaking. So you'd want an amp with an output impedance of 4ohm or less in this case. There are many common and cheap solid state amps that meet this criteria like JDS Atom and Schiit Magni.
Impedance especially becomes more relevant when you want to use a tube amp. Their output impediance is sometimes high like 100 ohms and they likely would not pair well with a headphone such as this one with an input impedance of 32 ohms.

I paid $110 for these about a year ago, and I consider it to be money well spent. I don't know all of the audiophile jargon, but I can tell you that I like listening to funk, rock, and classical music on these. I really like the way that they sound, and all of the instruments and vocals seem clear and unmuddled to me. I wish that they had a little more bass on funk tracks.

They're pretty comfortable, and I like that the earpads are fabric and not leather / vinyl. Also, I like how easily the cords can be changed.

I've noticed that I need to turn up my headphone amp louder with these than when I use closed headphones.

Also, beware that people around you will hear everything that you are listening to, because of the open back design.

At $59, these seem like a steal. Getting my dad a pair as a gift.

How does this compare with Soundcore Q45?

Yeah they definitely need an eq and amp to sound good. The bass will sound much better then.

these are wireier than the Bose but they sound crap compared to the bower and wilkins 800 series. Also less bouncy then the ultraboost 22s.

take your pick

I heard the same about the HEX4, but I have owned those more than a year without any problems. Overall, I am satisfied with their quality.
I had the Edition XS's (they had the exact same head band) I had to balance them on my head sitting down! no exaggeration (and this is after bending them square so they had 'some' tension toward my head) there was literally no friction on my head just my ears keeping them from falling off.

I LITERALLY COULD NOT LIE BACK ON A PILLOW WITH OUT THEM SLIDING OFF MY EARS! OR STAND UP OR WALK OR LEAN FOREWARD TO GRAB SOMETHING

so give me all the thumbs downs you want, I'm not a hater, I wanted them to work and am a fan of Hifiman otherwise...

( xen-xi , not throwing any of this at you at all, just ranting at the internet)👍

if you have a small head they will fall off, if you have a medium to large width head, they will be fine. if anything it's pressure on the top of your head, not clamping. I had the edition xs's they would just fall off if i looked left to right.
the 4xx's seem better from what I've heard

lifehack: I hot glue (or you can velcro) these bluetooth receivers onto my wired headphones to make them wireless. This one is everything I need. USB C, Bluetooth 5.0. If the battery ever dies, I can easily remove and replace the receiver instead of having to trash the whole headset

I have the 400i and 6xx (and Sr 80i). I'll admit I preferred the 6xx because they were somehow easier to choose, but I rotated into the 400i regularly and for long stretches. If these are anything like to 400i, $60 is an absurdly cheap entry into legit planar cans.

FYI, I use system level EQ to compensate to flat any of my headphones

If you haven't experienced sound from planar headphones and this is a great opportunity. I always thought I hated high frequency sounds and didn't think I could enjoy those until I tried planar headphones. If you are that person you don't want to miss this.
