Well they are nearfield monitors, meaning they mainly focus the sound right in front of the speakers.

Personally I use these as outdoor speakers for just me and the Misses. It's great because the volume can get relatively significant for us sitting in the path of the speakers, but if I walk to the left or right of my yard the sound volume drops significantly. That's good if you don't want to annoy your neighbors. Not so good if you are the type who wants the neighborhood to feel your vibes. Not to say you're neighbors won't hear them, they can play decently loud.

Regarding sound quality, it's very good, relatively speaking. It's a warmer non-fatiguing sound that is clean and enjoyable. It's also forgiving for lower quality source material. For the record I don't use the bluetooth and plug my phone directly into the speakers for the best sound and I use Youtube music. So they will sound even better with high res such as tidal.

Overall definitely a good bang for the buck.

Haha. Nah, they are actually good speakers for the money. I'm 51 and have been big into audio for decades. I have been on all the forums, and spent countless thousands of dollars on Amps, receivers, speakers, interconnects, etc. In my house right now I probably have more audio equipment than Best Buy, lol. my computer speakers are JBL LSR305 and 308's which are certainly better "studio monitors" than these Edifiers, but again, for the money these edifier's are great, with a very pleasing sound for casual listening.

The funny thing is that the 's' in this model stands for subwoofer, as in the subwoofer output on the back of the speaker meant obviously to hook up to a powered subwoofer.

What externa sub would you recommend with these?

These are nice speakers for sure, but they are not studio monitors… I don't know why they even bother calling them that… Makes no sense to me.

Would these "sound" or work better than a soundbar? They look awesome. I have seen them in sd a little bit ago. I assume the optical plugs into one speaker. How would the other speaker connect?

Ah-I see a "left out" for speaker wire to connect to other speaker.

Soundbars should have a center channel for the voice track . These speakers don't support anything other than stereo.

These definitely benefit from a sub. Hearing people say they thump is wild to me, but then again I've got them wall mounted in a bedroom, and I'm not sitting three feet in front of them. They do not make much impact with content below about 100Hz despite their frequency response spec. I usually crossover subs at about 70Hz, but with these I have the crossover on the sub set over 100Hz. The manual does state that plugging in the sub output changes the crossover frequency. This presumably is to take some of the load off the small 4" woofer so it can be a more accurate midrange driver.

There's way too many options to answer a general question like what sub to get, but I'll give you one good option. This is a very low-profile subwoofer that fills in these speakers nicely. You can get better performing subs for around this price in larger enclosures, but this small sub pairs well with the small enclosure theme of these small speakers. It fills in these speakers very well at neutral reference levels or with a tiny boost in bass as I like. It is not a good sounding sub for lots of bass boost as the high crossover point necessary for these speakers makes it get too boomy..:

This code knocks it down to $137. "SAVETEN1223"

You may also want to look at the Dayton SUB-1200, Jamo S810, or one of the budget Klipsch offerings. For about $300 total, you can get these bookshelves, a sub, and some satellite speaker mounts.

But then again, soundbars don't really do stereo well at all unless you are sitting near them. Even a 40" soundbar is poorly separated at a typical distance most people are from a TV.

I'd take a good stereo setup over a soundbar everyday.

Definitely a wider soundstage than any soundbar at their price. They are great little speakers, but they majorly benefit from a small sub.

The optical input is to pass digital info from a TV (or other digital source) to the speakers. There is a left speaker output on the right speaker separate from this.

The white van special isn't in an MDF enclosure with optical input, subwoofer output, built in EQ, reputable branded, etc.

I see a sub out port in the back of the speakers in the pics. Can that hook up too a powered sub?
