For those of you that subscribed to Netflix through Verizon last year on that cheap one year deal, and cancelled through Verizon, check your credit card bill.

I found out today that I was charged for their Ultra $22.99 plan starting today for this month, even though I cancelled about 10 days prior to my one year expiration through Verizon. And it showed cancelled and not subscribed to Netflix even today on Verizon, it only showed currently subscribed to Netflix on my Netflix account details; this what it showed.

Your membership was included with Verizon between 12/15/22 and 12/15/23. Contact Verizon for billing details.

So, yes, that is what I did. And Verizon did indeed show I cancelled my Netflix subscription through them and did not resub scribe or show a current subscription.

This is the charge that appeared today on my Netflix account, now supposedly managed through Netflix.

See? This is the gotcha. They tell me prior to today that I am subscribed through Verizon and have to manage my account through Verizon. I did, and through Verizon my Netflix is cancelled.

Starting today though, they say since I used my normal Netflix account and didn't start a new account through Verizon they charged me on "auto backup pay". I asked how they could do that when my Netflix account was inactive prior to my Verizon signup, I had cancelled prior to my term expiration on my Verizon sign up, and I did not subscribe or authorize to subscribe to Netflix through Netflix. They said to keep my service uninterrupted. A service both Verizon AND Netflix can see I cancelled.

Yep. You had to manage your Netflix account through Verizon, not possible through Netflix, you do, then Netflix charges you after your cancellation through Verizon, and you can only see that and manage that after the fact, not prior. So they get you for a month, you did not authorize, and how many people catch it even then?

Check your credit cards.

"Okay. I see that you've started this account with a different payment method and changed to Verizon, the old payment method was set as a backup and once you've cancelled your subscription with them, the back one is charged to uninterrupt the streaming."

"But why is that? When I would access my account, they said that I would have to manage my account through Verizon; which is what I did. So why does it re sign me up through Netflix, when it is obvious I cancelled the service and did not re up? My service through Netflix was inactive, prior to signing up through Verizon, and cancelled through Verizon prior to the one year expiration date. Who authorized a subscription to Netflix through Netflix after my cancellation?"

I did eventually get a refund, but I never should have been charged in the first place. Deceptive business practice.

First, Netflix at no point had my credit card. Sign up was through and billed by Verizon.
Second, I cancelled Netflix through Verizon immediately after signing up as to not forget to cancel a year later. This still gave me access to the full year. Third, after the year was up Netflix sent me an email that my account was on hold for non payment. I went in my Netflix account and cancelled the subscription. I received an email confirmation of cancellation.

Lastly, I immediately went in and signed up another year with the new Verizon deal and again cancelled immediately so that I don't forget to cancel a year from now.

I would delete all credit card information from your Netflix account to avoid anything like this in the future.
Netflix had my credit card info from years ago when I was a subscriber, I wanted the service, and that was the way I paid. There was no way to access my Netflix account payment info through Netflix previously because it showed I was subscribed through Verizon and managed through there. Therefore I was not able to delete any prior payment information, nor can I now, because I forgot to go in and delete it before the rep cancelled the subscription they initiated. To access my account now, and delete information I would have to resub scribe.

If I recall properly, it stated that you also signed up for Netflix and were required to cancel or adjust your Netflix plan following the offer. It's annoying, but it is what it is.

Netflix has this page about how to remove payment methods from the account:

https://help.netflix.com/en/node/113408

I followed the direct link to the account management page from there and saw that the credit card that was automatically charged still can't be removed. Presumably because, per the page linked above, a second payment method hasn't been added.

Will probably do another bundle now and get another refund next year if it's an issue again. Don't want something to get hung up on the back end before the offer expires near the end of this month.

The thing is, there was no way to do that. When you went to Netflix to look at your plan, it stated you purchased through Verizon and had to manage through Verizon. So when Netflix is telling you that, and you do that, and there is no way to actually manage your account through Netflix, why would you think that after you canceled through Verizon and managed through Verizon, as required by Netflix, that you would have to also cancel through Netflix? It should have been canceled period. There was ZERO way to manage your account through Netflix. I was only able to access it AFTER I canceled through Verizon, it expired through the term, and then Netflix decided to re subscribe me. It was not possible to do anything through Netflix until after the fact. It wasn't an auto renew type situation that the consumer could cancel, because we did, it was an auto renew without your permission type situation that you could not control until after the fact. Big difference.

I've been seeing this happen to everyone else. My renewal would be on the 18th. I canceled through Verizon last week. I had an account with Netflix that I converted with the NFL promo.

I just chatted with a Netflix rep. Summarized the situation, they had me verify the account and the old payment method. After that he was able to remove the old payment method to prevent being charged.

Hopefully this worked and also helps someone else!

Good advice. Maybe I'll go back and chat to have them remove all payment methods period, since I don't have access unless I subscribe. How did you get around this? " If you only have one payment method on file, you will be unable to remove it until after you add a new payment method."

I guess I don't understand why they can charge your backup method period, cause a cancellation should be, a cancellation. You're canceling the account, or subscription, it should not be related to which payment method you use.

That is now correct! I'll update if I get charged, but the rep seemed to think this is all handled and I won't be. I couldn't access anything on my own.

Exactly, They don't allow access to your Netflix account management unless you are currently subscribed to them, through them. Otherwise you are locked out.

Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear that, but my experience was rather different. Perhaps because I was a previous Netflix customer before the promotion.
My Netflix payment choice was immediately shifted from Verizon to Netflix, allowing me to modify my payment via the Netflix website.

I was charged also today even though I called Verizon weeks ago and they assured me I wouldn't.

Here is went on my end:
I have cancelled Netflix from Verizon on 14th, Then on 15th (VZ subscription end date), Netflix sent an email saying that my billing changed to an old credit card they had on file and will be charged on 25th (that was my previous billing cycle when I subscribed directly).
I don't see any CC charges yet.
My Netflix still works on streaming devices. (I am assuming this will continue to work till 25th)
Netflix account login on web shows I have to resubscribe to see the account.
So far so good.
Good luck everyone, as mentioned above VZ customer service sucks, I would rather pay Netflix another 22 bucks for a month and enjoy for a month instead of arguing with VZ customer service reps.

No, I am not re-subscribing to Netflix at $22. I have other options :-)

Yes, I thought it incredibly shady. We've all signed up for those promos that renew automatically unless you cancel, so you know that going in, but this ended up being an auto renew even if you cancel situation.

You must cancel you subscription with Netflix or need at least one payment method.

I agree. I will subscribe every year for one month to binge watch, but I find after a couple days I really don't see anything I want to watch. Not to mention their new pricing is outrageous.
