Costco has had these for this price for 2 months
These things are so dang expensive. This should be the regular price lol
If just needing controllers when docked (and if you own controllers from other consoles) I would suggest the 8bitdo wireless adapter. $20 -I just got one and it works flawlessly. Good way to limit the need to buy other controllers

About $60 per sale by the looks of it.
Lol, what? Do you mean they sell them wholesale to retailers for $60? They definitely cost more than $5 to manufacture. If they were easy to make there would be cheap alternatives that didn't suck and weren't missing a handful of features.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if the BOM was close to $5 but I agree no way Nontendo is making $60 profit off a $65 retail sale, I am pretty sure that was a joke/embellishment or sarcasm. I know it can be hard to read sarcasm on the Internet.

are there any third parties that are close to as good as the OEM for half the price?
No third parties for half the price, but the best deal ever was the $50 for a switch pro controller with a copy of super mario odyssey, but that was 2 or 3 years ago now.

Question from a parent buying the kids a Switch for Xmas - do the joycons work independently for TV play (one joycon for each kid, just like with the OLED screen setup)? I know it comes with a grip to turn two joycons into one docked controller but wondering if this is too big for little hands? Trying to determine if I need a second set of joycons right away... Thanks!

2nd pair right away is very useful, since some games require either both paired together (grip you mentioned is useful but not necessary) or a full "pro" controller (see comment about "8bitdo" above).

I'm sure others that pay attention better can correct me if I'm wrong, But basically there are 3 multiplayer kinds of games, in regards to controllers:
1. Full functionality from one joycon
2. Partial functionality from one joycon but "full" is better, or
3. Two joycons or pro controller required

It is hard to find a joycon alternative that works better for smaller hands. They are great for that. 8bitdo makes some smaller options that might get treated as "pro" controllers. Actually I'd be surprised if Nintendo allowed for any non-joycon to show up as a joycon so đŸ¤·

Yes each joycon can work independently as a controller

Well, it depends. If they want to play rocket league or Fortnite, that won't work. Need an actual "pro style" controller or 2 joycons. But for something like Mario kart and Mario wonder and such just one will work. So it depends on what they want to play.

Only thing to note is that these red and blue controllers connect to the reverse ends of the switch compared to the original red and blue that your switch came with. Meaning the blue now connects to the right side instead of the left side.

Found this out when I bought these to replace a damaged blue original joycon. They do sell replacement for the original blue oem LEFT joycon but at $40/joyvon. The costco deal was a better buy since we now have an extra red joycon for playing smashbros.

What kinds of issues are you all having with your controllers? Mine seem to lose sync often and I'm wondering if this means I need new controllers or have a bigger issue?

I got the cheap knock-off controllers from TEMU for around $23. They work great…been playing with them for 2 months and no issues.
