Similar situation about a year ago. Once I upgraded to the Uber membership, the coupons downgraded to only 40% off. Never saw the 50% off again. But they kind of balance out considering the savings you get from having the membership.

I think Uber changed it so free trials end immediately upon cancellation.

Just tried it and it indeed doesn't end until the end of the 3 month trial period. Strange because I used a 1 month trial a week ago that ended immediately upon cancellation.

Just did that, cancelled 1 month free trial (told me benefits would end immediately) and it let me sign up for 3 month a second later.

Proceeded with cancelling 3 months and it stays until March.

Probably targeted promo: I've been emailed a 6 month promo from Capital One (Quicksilver card) for Uber One. It's says you pay up front and they're reimburse the $9.99 each month up to six months. It came up in an email, but worth checking your email/account prior to starting.
