I wonder if this could also be used to keep 3D filament dry.

can someone explain to me how plugging it in would remove the moisture from the desiccant for them to be used again? i don't understand the physics of this. or does one need to replace the gel pellets eventually? i feel the need to understand before i buy. i guess im used to dehumidifiers involving a water tank.

edit: plugged in to heat up desiccant......no batteries involved. learned something new today!

It dry the desiccant by heating them up.

Yeah. I use Eva Dry packs (same thing) in my filament container (a storage tote with the foam gasketing that seals it). You just have to remember to periodically check the desiccant color on the pack's little front window to see if you need to plug it in.

Same question for me. I'm sure it could, but wonder if it's any better than getting rechargeable silica and just microwaving that or putting it in the oven.

Only useful if it is in a sealed environment. Get a real dehumidifier, if you have humidity issues. A tote box, does not count as sealed.

Those asking about 3D Filament the answer is It Depends.

If you live in humid areas, no chance, but if you store in a sealed container it can keep the ambient moisture down in that container. Note, it will not dry wet filament, that is much more intensive, but if you use a sealed storage bin it can absolutely help there. The desiccant packs in filament is often for any moisture left in the air inside the bag and not for the filament itself, a stop gap if you will.

For $10 it's a good buy.

Some very thorough testing by respected 3D printing influencers have shown that sealed dessicant dry boxes do in fact pull moisture out of filament. Was a pleasant surprise, no more messing with toaster ovens or food dehydrators needed.

I use a simlar rechargable dessicant pack (they are all essentially the same) in a sealed box with a humidistat which gets the humidity down to ~ 10-12%% in the box

Oh yeah, only to a point though. You ain't putting water logged nylon in there and expecting it to make it dry. It's more of insurance.

I'm testing how bad filament can get currently. I have spools submerged for 1yr and one at 6mo that I need to test vs one in open air and one sealed.

Buying to use in container of DIY dishwasher detergent to prevent caking. Unsure how this will perform with all the dust and powder so we'll see 😬

You can also just buy packs of indicator silica beads and "recharge" yourself in your oven/dehydrator. Marginally more trouble to refresh the packs but you can do numerous at a time
