To anyone considering this who also values their privacy, I'd highly recommend reading through a bit of this thread on their forums:

https://forums.plex.tv/t/weekly-r...eak/860206
I've had Plex Pass for almost 10 years and while it's got a great UI, I can't root enough for competitors like Emby or Jellyfin more and I've only felt more disgruntled with Plex as time goes on.

What other paid service have you seen where there is literally no direct customer support avenue short of, "post it in the forums and hope Plex employees see it to fix it." I'm not kidding. That's how they MAYBE fix issues with the platform. I get that supporting so many streaming platforms takes a lot of effort, but then STOP PUSHING BROKEN NEW FEATURES AND FIX THE EXISTING ONES!

I have issues with local live TV streaming/recording, using Plex Pass with friends, Bluetooth audio sync issues when using the latest Apple TV 4Ks, Plex Downloads for offline watching has virtually never worked, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Sorry about the long rant but I just feel that people considering should be aware at this point, and diving in with a few of the other competitors when starting up might be the right move. Thanks for coming to my ranty TED talk.
I like the functionality I thought it was worth it when I bought it a few years ago. I appreciate the work they do, I'm more concerned they're going to stop working if they don't make enough

Technically against the terms of service, but I use a cloud flare tunnel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4P31IhYx9Y
It allows you to keep your ports router ports closed which you otherwise would have to open.

i only ever hear bad things about the direction plex is going. these life time deals seem like a quick money grab before they go completely in the opposite direction of what plex was? and they're now data mining and logging everything. they even make it crazy hard to find privacy settings. and they're opting ppl in (by default) in sharing data/logging data. i.g. you have to go to this obscure page to disable playback data sent to plex that plex turns on by default (https://www.plex.tv/about/privacy...ences/#opd) why isn't this in the regular settings? prob bc they dont' want you to turn it off

or am I wrong?

the "PEACEOUT23 " makes me think of, 'lata nerds thanks for the $$. PEACE OUT"

The things people complain about these days! Plex is a breeze to use, works wonderfully, and these new 'features' can be opted out or removed quite easily with a few minutes of work. Should we have to "work", well, that's the complaint. Nevertheless, Plex itself is fantastic for its' use case: remote and local video playback without needing to micromanage networks, devices or media types.

as it turns out, i coincidentally needed to set up a home media server today

i found plex extremely easy to set up:

-installed plex server on my mac mini m1
-created account and went through setup (they ask the privacy option during setup so you can easily disable it)
-installed plex app on apple tv
-started watching

i also tried out jellyfin but unfortunately it didnt work as well:

-installed jellyfin server on my mac mini m1
-went through setup, very similar to plex
-discovered that appletv doesnt have a jellyfin app, so i had to do research and ended up trying out infuse video player
-started watching, but discovered that the siri actions dont work. eg, "fast forward 30 minutes" doesnt do anything

im sticking with plex

edit: i went through all the settings and disabled all the streaming crap, so my dashboard is clear and only shows my local files. so it is possible to clear the bloat

Old timer here... Spent countless hours with a 'hacked' original xbox and XBMC. You really had to be willing to get your hands dirty but I loved every minute of it. I'll never forget the used game store employee getting annoyed with me as I asked to look at every version of whatever CD Rom game it was (MechAssault?) to find one with the right serial number to know it was an early version that could be exploited...

Fast forward to today... Kodi is the new XBMC, they changed the name long ago since it no longer requires an xbox. If I understand correctly, it's still a much more 'hands-on' solution than Plex, which for the most part is plug and play.

While I agree Plex has become somewhat bloated, I rarely see any of this bloat except some times after server updates (I get their emails so I know there are all sorts of features that I've never seen). And when I do see something, it's easy enough to get rid of it. So there are clearly some settings somewhere that can keep you from automatically getting all of the new features pushed onto you. Same for the privacy concerns, you can opt-out of these things very easily. I would rather it were opt-in but it's not a show-stopper for me.

I have a huge lossless music collection. PlexPass is worth every penny for PlexAmp alone. Skipping TV show intros and credits is also really nice.

I would buy it again if I had to. I've had essentially zero issues over 10 years or so. Lots of negative comments about plex here, thought I'd share my positive experience. As someone who uses it exclusively to stream their own content at home, away, and with friends and family, it has been excellent and painless for me for a long time.
I was coming here to pretty much write exactly this. Anyone who has been there since the very beginning knows Plex is worth every penny and we'd buy it again. The sharing, casting, caching, ease of use, set it and forget it, it's just flawless for what it's designed to do. Most people complaining are doing so over features most of their userbase doesn't even use (I honestly think they should drop things like Live TV etc). Yes they're a corporation who needs to make money and they add things for newbies that makes money but for their core userbase, they make it so we can stay in our little bubbles and use "XBMC on crack" and never miss the days with how much of a pain in the ass it all used to be, ha.

Side topic- any software that can do korean subtitles? It is really aggravating as my wife has no interest in learning English for watching movies in general.

In theory, you can get any subtitles you want from opensubtitles.org [opensubtitles.org].

In reality, it's sometimes hard to find a subtitle that matches up exactly with the version of a video you're watching. There are so many different versions of everything, timing of subtitles can be a huge issue.

Fortunately, Plex has a simple lookup via opensubtitles.org and you can try several subtitles within minutes while you're watching whatever it is you're watching. The more popular the video, the better chance you find a subtitle file that aligns with your video.

What makes Plex by far the best OTA DVR? Is the main advantage auto deleting commercials? I've been using the newest Tablo OTA DVR and that works really well for me.
fwiw I used Tablo for a few years and I like their service as well, and it has the best out-of-box experience. But I found their hardware to be junk (especially compared to hdhomeruns) and their apps to be slow and buggy. Watching a sports recording (which involves frequent fast forwards) was a huge pain, even if the app wasn't frequently crashing. And exporting recordings to a plain file was its own adventure. But that was over a year ago at this point so maybe it's improved.

The newest version 4 Tablo is pretty nice with no monthly fee for program guide data now. The downside of the new version is no viewing away from home that's native to the software, but if you VPN into your home network you can watch remotely. Haven't looked into exporting files. I'm just happy to just be able to record and watch local news and sports on my own timeline and FF commercials.

How well does it work remotely?

How well does it work when you have a slow network connection and need to drop bandwidth to get the signal?
The DVR functionality (like everything else in Plex) works more or less as well remotely as it does locally. I don't have particularly good (cable) internet, but I've never had a problem with remote streaming, everything works great and looks great.

That's probably Plex's biggest draw, the almost-zero-config remote viewing on any device. Like others, I have relatives who use my Plex like another streaming service, and I have friends who also use Plex and we stream from each other's remote libraries as easily as from local media.

Very aware of Plex. Was asking about JF.

Tablo also got rid of the commercial skip in the latest hardware and new software (app) version and added a lot of the same commercial ad based stuff that Plex (and let's be honest) other streaming platforms have adopted. Plex's ability to completely remove the commercials, or have the option to also skip, edges out Tablo in this department for me. Everyone has their own use case but when you're faced with paying outrageous cable bills vs setting up a Plex, Tablo, Emby, Jellyfin, etc for a fraction of the price it's a no brainer for the tech inclined. Plex is fantastic for 1080p streaming remote and local but if you're streaming higher resolution video like 4K or raw recordings from an antenna then you may well find yourself in need of an upgraded WiFi router or an Ethernet cable to ensure a smooth experience.
