I've had this exact brand tenderizer and it is terrible. The clearcoat finish starts coming off after a few trips trough the dishwasher, and then the aluminum alloy underneath is exposed and oxidizes dark black.
This is a tool that you want to be able to sanitize after flattening raw chicken or pork.
I bought a Gerior brand stainless steel one off Amazon for about twice this price and it looks built to last 50 years.

The high temperature and caustic environment in a dishwasher is probably what did your KitchenAid meat tenderizer's finish in… the instructions on this (from the manufacturer) are "hand wash only." It's even one of the info bullet points under "About this item" on Amazon:

:
EASY CARE: Hand wash with warm water and a mild detergent. Rinse and dry immediately.
Also - I own one of these as well and hand wash only. I've had no issues with the finish coming off.
I have this and it's great for beating meat. That said, you cannot put it in the dishwasher. It'll end up with a bunch of nasty stuff on it that will come off on your hands and food. I'm sure I can fix mine but I hand wash it from now on.

What kind of moron would design something for smashing raw chicken that would require hand washing? What kind of even bigger moron would follow such idiotic instructions? Think, McFly. Unless you enjoy the gastrointestinal effects of severe salmonella poisoning.

This is a defective product.
You're calling me, "McFly," yet you're the one that can't follow simple hand wash only care instructions? Do you also put your expensive forged cutlery in the dishwasher and then complain about "rust?"
If you look at the customer images it looks like trash, the finish comes off even with one to two hand washes. The image reviews that are positive look fake as all get-out.

Do you own a dishwasher? If so, why would you not want to delegate it the washing of something as mundane as a meat beater? Or are we supposed to be hand-washing literally everything? Then what is the point of owning a dishwasher?
Also, did you just suggest that you're supposed to care for a $10 POS aluminum hammer the same way you do for a $200 Japanese knife? Now, that's just bizarre.
There's no place for aluminum utensils in the kitchen. Period.

Wait, are you mad at me or something - because some kitchen utensils require hand washing? My point about the Japanese or German made cutlery is not to compare the quality of a $100 + knife to a meat mallet, but to state that certain kitchen utensils are not made to hold up to the harsh environment of a dishwasher.
If you want to spend $40 + on a stainless steel meat tenderizer, then be my guest. Feel free to post a deal on one, as well. Hopefully it will go Front Page.
