Saw this deal earlier today and was curious if anyone had any experience with the computer or thoughts on whether this was a good deal or not. Obviously the markdown jumps out but not sure how well priced it was to begin with.

HP Business laptops have high list prices so the company is able to offer various tiered discounts and end-of-year rebates to its corporate customers. The effective price paid by a corporate customer will be lower to significantly lower than list. Last month, HP offered some very aggressive pricing on several EliteBook configurations. When that happens, consumers can find some pretty good deals. However, if you're looking for bells and whistles, probably look at another line of laptops.

I have used multiple HP Business laptops at work over 20+ years and for the most part have been quite happy with them. The build quality of the HP Business laptops is typically better than the company's consumer laptops. They're designed for easy servicing if needed, with replaceable parts available for a number of years. Many HP Business laptops come with a three (3) year warranty; however, the true benefits (NBD on-site service, stocked parts, Tier 2 Helpdesk, etc.), require a service contract and generally aren't available to an end user consumer.

I currently have 2 HP business laptops for personal use: a 2013 14" ProBook 6475b and a 14" EliteBook 845 G10 purchased several weeks ago. The ProBook has been solid since Day 1 and is still used occasionally for streaming and surfing the internet. I haven't had enough time to fully evaluate the EliteBook but my initial impressions have been favorable.

The SD ZBook Firefly G9 is a previous year mobile workstation model. It features an older 12th Gen Intel i5-1245U CPU and a workstation (professional) Nvidia Quadro T550 graphics card. This is still a capable laptop with some decent specs and a 3-year limited warranty. The display isn't the best if color gamut and brightness are important, but you can always connect a larger external monitor with higher resolution, improved brightness and wider color gamut. Since this is marketed as a mobile workstation, I think 16GB RAM is unfortunate, but at least it is upgradeable. Just under 4lbs so it's not too heavy, but my EliteBook 845 G10 is just over 3lbs (no dGPU). Clearly, the Nvidia Quadro T550 and cooling in the ZBook add weight. Finally, read the comments on the Micro Center listing.

You're welcome. This laptop is aimed at professional applications (such as CAD) where driver stability is required. FWIW, I didn't see the Quadro T550 GPU listed as officially certified by AutoDesk for AutoCAD 2024; it is certified for AutoCAD 2023 and AutoCAD 2022. Certification is important from a support perspective. The lack of certification for AutoCAD 2024 might be a reason the laptop is on sale. More likely this is a prior model closeout and Micro Center wants to move these laptops while it can.

That certification only means something if your buying 800 of these and there is a problem directly related to a GPU Driver issue Then you can hold fire to Nivida because you have an issue across your entire fleet. Nvidia is actually phasing out the Quadro line and I dont have an issue with this. I use a Zbook for engineering daily and absolutely love the build quality. It surpasses apple IMHO. This would be a great personal computer, if only I needed one.

Individuals do not enjoy the same level of vendor support that corporate customers pay for, expect and receive. Once contacted, one of the things the AutoDesk support rep will ask an individual to provide is an NFO file containing detailed system information. If the GPU identified isn't certified for use, that will certainly be brought up / looked at as a possible source of the problem. Given the T550 has been certified for use with the 2 previous versions of AutoCAD, the support rep will probably be willing and able to resolve the issue. Will that still be the case a few versions from now, after multiple changes to the software have been made? Who knows.

Glad to hear you enjoy using the ZBook.

I have a general preference for enterprise laptops, and the Firefly has become my "if the stars align" model. This deal is tempting and I'd jump right on it were I not trying to hold onto my current aging Spectre for a couple more years.

I buy cheapo Dell enterprise models for friends and family. My first big-splash laptop was the OG Dell XPS 13 (and I love it still despite two motherboard replacements - the platform was doomed). However, with the XPS having gone so downmarket the Spectre and Envy models now deliver some of the best premium laptops out there... and the Firefly tends to take that to 11!

Anyone know if the T550 graphics on this model would support NVIDIA Video Super Resolution (which is supposed to be available to all Turing GPUs)?

Good luck!
Jon

Check out the following link below. I glanced at the page very quickly. The quote below appears under the Release Highlights tab. The T550 Laptop GPU is listed under the Supported Products tab.

"NVIDIA RTX Video Super Resolution (VSR) Update 1.5– the VSR feature that upscales video content viewed through Chromium-based browsers previously required Ampere generation, or later, GPU architectures. Update 1.5 now extends VSR support to include Turing generation GPUs."

In general, I also prefer business (enterprise) laptops. The build quality is usually better and sometimes significantly better compared with their consumer counterparts. Same with accessories tailored for a specific business laptop / series compared with universal types that *might* be available for consumer laptops. The old ThinkPad and ProBook docking stations were awesome.

I just bought a used ThinkPad T480s for use as a travel notebook. Took out the 128GB SSD and installed a new 2TB SSD. Then a clean install of Windows 11 Pro, which was remarkably quick and uneventful. Of course, later on the updates kept coming for a while, lol.

There are some good buys to be had on off-lease business laptops for someone willing to invest a bit of time and not holding out for pristine condition. Dell XPS has definitely gone down in quality.
