I need a SIM card for my car using maybe 5 minutes or less of phone calls per months and 1GB of data. Is there any cheap plans basically just to keep a number alive like $2/mo?
I've been using Xfinity Mobile for $15 month with 1Gb data for years and never got near the data limit. Best part is if you also have their home internet you get a $10 discount so my mobile in effect is just $5 month
From their FAQ:
After you have tried our service and know what data plan is right for you, then you can choose the length of plan depending on how clever you want to get; 3, 6 or 12 months. Mint Tip: You can lock in our introductory 3-month pricing by renewing for 12 months. Note: Our introductory plan prices are not always the same as limited time promotional offers. What's a good plan (prepaid or post paid) for two lines and how much it costs approximately including taxes? Use around 2-4 gb per line and occasional hotspot (very rare) to have couple tablets connected while on the move. Have been paying $80 (including taxes and fees) T-Mobile one plan (unlimited everything - I am sure there are caps or throttling but we never met the limits) for a long time. I get $20 credit if both lines stay under 2gb per month each but we rarely do.
super annoyed with attempting to transfer still and no easy way thru the app to contact support when porting a number over from T-Mobile. so far wasted 2 weeks of this "service"
I am with Mint but my last promo has expired. I just ordered the Lyca sim deal which lasts for 3 months. I would like to get on this deal again. How long do I have to activate?

Once you order your sim, you get 45 days time to activate it.
Couldn't agree with you more. It was an ABSOLUTE nightmare getting our 4 phones switched to Mint from Verizon. The customer service agents are either clueless or they're FLAT OUT lying to people. It took us 5 or 6 calls to get all phones activated and every time we called, we'd get a new agent who would tell us something that was the complete opposite of what the previous one said. We almost went back to Verizon.
Now, having said all that, I am glad we followed the process through. After taxes and fees we pay about $17/month per phone and our coverage is excellent.
yes, unlimited talk and text regardless of the data plan. i use it for work from home purposes. it's reliable for me. i'm always on wifi anyway so dont use much data.
Nice. I have unlimited for 6 months might lower it tho depending on data use. Rarely am I off wifi

Took me like 5 mins to switch from Verizon the other day. Reallg staight forward just need account number and port pin....Verizon closed my account as soon as it was ported tho. Probably the quickest service Verizon has ever given me.

Good info. No one in this thread seems to have read the FAQ but you. If it's $15 for 12 months that's a great deal, especially if you have a GV number to make moving around providers easy.
I like mint a lot. Good coverage. The only thing I really dislike is that I show up as "wireless caller" instead of my name. There are reports online of people's caller ID showing up with completely different names. This is annoying enough to possibly switch in the future. I called mint and they were no help.

I really liked Mint when I did their trial, but there was an area in town that got no coverage.
Mint is Tmobile network.
I have no problems in the Minneapolis area, but cabin is hit and miss. Head up to the north woods and things come and go. The big limitation is no roaming, T-mo network only. If not wandering about outside a city - no problems.
