Damn, great deal and I was waiting for this one for weeks. Unfortunately got impatient and went for a much less compelling deal for the X AX.

Z790'S are better priced than AMDs last gen x570s. Its ridiculous. Almost makes me want to switch platforms

Only positive I see is AMD has more than one gen support per socket. Intel generally requires a new board every generation.

Was the Noctua able to keep up with the 14700k? Talking just everyday use / gaming.

It works fine. Exhaust fan to the rear. Temps are stable. Newer games may run hotter. Worst case scenario, I will buy an additional noctua fan to mount

Any experience ddr5 stability 64gb? Should be fine at xmp but who knows. Need to replace my Asus z690i for expansion and don't want to spend much for nothing

also considering MSI z690 unify for $229 for a better board (?)

I considered the unify as well. I don't see a benefit over this motherboard. Bought Crucial 64GB off Newegg for $206.50

id highly recommend investing in the Elite AX Wi fi 7 board. Wifi 7 will get you close to a 10GB connection once routers mature this year.

also the chipset says one slot is limited to gen 3 speeds on the mobo
Chipset:
- 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, supporting PCIe 4.0 and running at x4 (PCIEX4_1)
- 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, supporting PCIe 3.0 and running at x4 (PCIEX4_2

with the newer version that comes with wi fi 7 you will be able to get
Chipset:
- 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, supporting PCIe 4.0 and running at x4 (PCIEX4_1)
- 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, supporting PCIe 4.0 and running at x4 (PCIEX4_2

pcie 4.0 is twice as fast as pcie 3.0 . I own the wi fi 7 version and the ez latch system is incredible and the 2 pcie slots can be used with a 4090 allowing plenty of clearance to add cards. I would use all 4 m.2 even if one of the m.2 disables two sata ports. You can always add a enterprise HBA card which will give you 8 more sata hdds at

I'm building my first pc and a little out of my comfort zone so appreciate this. I have a 4090 and am adding parts as I go. The wifi7 is about $100 more, I'm not adding crazy amount amount of storage but did get an m.2. Any reason not to do the $100 upgrade?

unfortunately this is a bad time now to buy the wi fi 7 version of this board on newegg. I paid 269 with a 20.00 rebate and free 64GB micro sd card on black friday.

Z790 is a great board because the z690 fell short with the memory VRM setup . This board is great deal for what it is and once wi fi 7 matures i would sell it and get a better board to include wifi 7 if you decide to get a router. depending on your environment wifi 7 can do close to 10GB speeds wirelessly which would make your 2.5GB port obsolete. However you can opt to get a 10GB nic , i use a intel enterprise 10GB nic and a sound blaster ae-9 for my two slots. I do not need the extra storage because I have a 10GB connection to my true nas core serving 300 TB of data. I plan on filling all 4 m.2 slots and doing a raid 0 on 3 of them and the os just standalone to saturate my 10GB connection to my server..

Do not bother with thunderbolt 4 as it is useless now since thunderbolt 5 will be out in a few months which will be 2-3x faster. The gigabyte company is the best in class when it comes to bios upgrades and stability. Even better than Asus and MSI. The ez latch system is incredible , try changing out a NVME and removing tiny screws when the motherboard is in a vertical position, its a pain and i always lose tiny screws which end up falling inside the case. The only thing i dont like about mobo manufactures this gen is alot of them do not have LED diagonistic so you wont know if its the cpu/ram etc causing the issue. I purchased 64GB of DDR5 made by gskill running at 6400. I am not overclocking , no need to when running a 4090.

Also every other mobo blocks your pcie slots since the 3090 and 4090 takes up 3 slots making an 8x slot completely useless. leaving you with one slot running at x4 pcie gen 4

the only downside is one of the slots here is pcie gen 3 x4 , so if you added a cheap 1 slot m.2 it would run at gen 3 and or thunderbolt 5 might require a pcie gen 4. Like i said earlier the wi fi 7 version has 2 slots running at pcie gen 4 , x4 .

If you dont have much storage i would add 3 m.2s and just use the 6 sata ports on the mobo for ssds or spinning rust. you can use windows 11 storage spaces to run them in raid 0. just make sure you install the m.2 in the right slot because i believe like all other mobos no matter which one you buy will disable 2 sata ports.

Meteror lake will be the next big upgrade probably only adding 4 more cpu lanes but will use significantly less power and the IPC will improve greatly. But this is another year away from release.

The onboard sound is ok from what i hear and there is a qflash bios where you can flash the bios with the computer off.

The only reason not to buy it , is if you love fancy graphics on the mobo , RGB craziness , Led diagnostic on mobo, thunuderbolt 4 soldered into the mobo which takes up cpu lanes,
or you want a crazy watercooling setup and overclocking bios. BUt you will end up spending 300 more for that. not worth it.

This has a 20Gbps usb port and this is good enough for a external m.2 device to move data. I wont be overclocking nor do i care about RGB , every mobo has plenty of fan headers and can be split using cables. all bioses are practically the same. Wifi 7 is awsome and should get better. so if you plan on keeping your mobo for a few years and want a faster option for lan speeds get this option or just install a 10GB nic. The good thing about have another free slot that is gen 4 you can install a enterprise HBA card giving you sas to sata 8 connections to hdds or SSDs and you could do a raid 0 or raid 6 locally if you have the right case up to 64TiB in storage spaces.
