That's what I use it for. Just find somewhere on the cage to lean against.

I want to put a pullup bar in my house. It will have to be free standing given our layout. ie no wall attachment. No celing attachment.

At at that budget perhaps opt for a power rack , providing additonal lift possibilities exercises along with increased stability? I've been gradually dialing in my sights on the PR-1000, PR-1100 from REPfitness for example.
