I found one of these for 1 dollar a few years ago and it works really well. Don't pay the full $25 but I would definitely suggest this.

Are the amazon smart plugs really that much better than tp-link and several others that are about 1/4 of the Amazon smart plug $25 price for one? I have some of them but I don't really see much difference.

No, just a little easier to pair with Alexa. Downside is they don't work with others like Google home. It's nice when it's cheap though.
