I just offloaded one of these 12 bay hot swap cases on FB marketplace the other day for $160, glad I did it before the sale popped up!

In a real datacenter environment, you'll have a cold aisle (front panel side, sometimes rear), and a hot aisle. You'll have fans spinning at high speeds within the case to move that cold air from aisle to aisle. The aisles themselves will have big fans moving air to bigger air handlers. These cases are not ideal in situations where it's not mounted in a rack. You'll still be better off with a regular case when not rack mounted.

Man, been looking on SD for a server chassis for the past two months. Finally pulled the trigger on a SilverStone 4U via Amazon last month. Almost bought this to return that one because it's like half the price for what I paid… until I realized it's 26" deep and my home rack can only support a 20" ☹️ TU for finding a good deal for server stuff though, thanks, and this is a good deal for folks like me (entry level home lab build), so hop on it!

I just bought this for $339 last week from Amazon and received it today. REALLY bummed about the price difference, but I don't want to deal with sending it back...
The case is pretty nice. I bought it specifically for the hot swap drive bays. The quality is acceptable, not amazing, but overall I'm pleased.
The biggest complaint I have is that the lid screws on from the sides with 4 small screws. My old case has a cover that slid into place and was held very securely with one thumb screw (much nicer).

What did you use? I just started a home server cabinet build where the rails are 21.5" deep and I thought that was a bit much. I don't know who's hanging 26" deep racks in their house... Or how they convinced their wife that it wouldn't be an eye sore.

Thanks for the tip! when considering that for under $500 one can get the 36-drive supermicro with redundant 1KW PSU's, this rosewill is kind of a hard sell at $250.

Shame the 36 bay Super Micro is low profile only. Can't get any decent GPUs in there. Really wish the Super Micro 4u 24 bay was more available.

LOL my home rack is even deeper than 26" Smilie

(32", I think), otherwise 27"-long Dell R710 won't fit inside. It sits in the basement, in my workshop. My wife is a rare guest over there Smilie

Bought the rack for like $100 from FB marketplace - may be worth checking your local offerings over there or on Craigslist.

What Supermicro 4U case would you recommend that has similar options to this Rosewill? I see there's a million different ones on eBay. Do they have pretty standard E-ATX mobo + ATX PSU support? Thanks!

The picture description is wrong.

Rosewill RSV-L4412U is the one with the front-loading hot-swappable bays. This is the one you want.

The other models like the 4000u, avoid them. They are like in the picture, they are mounted backwards and are a total pain to replace HDDs with.

I got a free chassis on a BOGO in Dec 2019 when coin mining was cooling off, causing the cases to be CHEAP. The Hot swap bays would probably be nice. The fan based one I got are kind of a pain to change out.

I still haven't used the second chassis. It's in my project pile.
