I have not been a Sam's member for a while, probably two or more years, so I cannot speak on recent lapses of membership. My Costco also ran out and I only sign up to these when they are either close to free or near free. The extra $20 pushed me that way. I signed into student beans, clicked the promo, and it took me to "members sale" or something like that. I added the sale to my cart and checked out with PayPal. I was told I'd receive an email within 24 hours. I got the email within 5 minutes and proceeded to claim the membership. It was easy to sign up. I also got the promo code to the $20 travel and entertainment credit in the first email as well. I then went in store to get my card and that's that.
This is not me being ungrateful for the $20 promo, but it was a bit misguided. So you can use the $20 on anything in the travel and entertainment services section of Sam's. It wasn't working on mobile for me so I hopped on my laptop. The best value, unless you definitely want to go to a cirque du soleil show, Busch gardens Tampa, or other resorts, is the movie tickets. I got two AMC yellow tickets and thought I could also add some popcorn to fully utilize the $20. To my surprise there is added tax and fees, along with an added surcharge for online order or whatnot. So only two tickets and $5 added in fees for a total of $23. I paid $3 out of pocket and scored some AMC tickets.
Overall it was easy, I just wish the $20 would have been more useful. But I got a movie date night out of it. Guessing I could score some movie tickets on sale plus the $3, I got a Sam's membership for around $8 OTD. I'm happy with that for sure!
I hope that helps!
Just redeemed the travel/entertainment credit for cheap AMC Yellow tickets (9 bucks per ticket).

AMC is a little far from me now and I still have some credit and maybe a ticket I have not used in years. So I did the Cinemark which is near me at $10 a ticket so $24.50 with the taxes/fees. Hopefully I will use it one day. I have only been to a theater once since the pandemic
