You don't really need these unless you are in a shop and have to document to a customer the exact thickness remaining on pads. For your home use you can just look at the pads and see if they are good, getting low, or too low.
It's easy to have a look at pad wear when rotating tires. For me that's every 10K miles, which is a nice interval for brake inspection as well. When they're obviously getting thin it's time to find a deal on some pads, and replace them at your leisure instead of when they're completely gone and have destroyed the rotors. There's nothing wrong with replacing pads that still have some wear left in them, for the sake of preventive maintenance. Running them to failure is guaranteed to cost much more. Anything less than about 25% remaining and it's time to get a new set of pads coming, with plenty of time to get them replaced. For those without a fancy measuring tool, that's 1/8" or so depending on the vehicle, or about the thickness of 2 nickels. If they're the thickness of 2 pennies or less you're in the danger zone. One pad is sometimes more worn than the other, and the thinner one should be your focus for these measurements. It's a good idea to clean and re-grease caliper pins if you see uneven wear.

I got that your comment was tongue-in-cheek, but I wanted to share with anyone reading this that with brakes an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Gosh this comment is twice as long as I originally intended.
I've got so many random one purpose gadgets like this in my toolbox drawers, and after cleaning up and looking through everything; I can't remember what half of them even do. Trying to convince myself not to add to the clutter heh.

Yet another tool gadget, but much better than the traditional eyeball method and, can't beat the price.

Quality seems ok; will find out when it gets here tomorrow.

The listing below says to "Insert tips between the edge of the rotor and steel back up plates on the disc pads." You can see an example in the second photo on this listing:

I just visually check it. But some of us like to be very scientific about things, so they can calculate how long their brakes will last. For most people, just look at the pads, if it's getting close to the low brake indicator cut into the middle of the pad or past it, might need to think about replacing them.

Sometimes l wish I could recheck the measurements I receive from the shop. For the price I feel it's worth it.

When they pitched this idea at the GEARWRENCH tool designer's meeting, one guy busted out laughing and everyone else just stared at him. Then they all simultaneously started laughing hysterically. Next month they're releasing a tool to measure remaining dish soap in the bottle, and bar soap calipers so you'll know when to break out a new bar of soap. I plan to keep log books of all these measurements for historical purposes, so that future archaeologists can try to make sense of what I was thinking. Well the joke is on them because there is no making sense of it.

Thanks for posting, OP.

Exactly...they lie so much. When I went to get my alignment done, Firestone guy (2 yrs ago) told me I wouldn't pass inspection cuz brakes were so low. I'm just now going to change them.

This is what my mechanic tells me to do... It's also the reason why those tabs aare built. But I did check it once in a while to see when I need to replace them.
