It's black. Should be white.

Doesn't blend in at all.
Black reflects less than white and is better in a light-controlled dedicated home theater room.

White is a good compromise when the theater room is shared, like a living room, where aesthetics are more important at non movie watching times.

I've had this running a 100" screen in a light controlled room for a year now and have been very pleased. Fan noise is minimal, only really notice it when there is no audio playing, picture is impressively bright, the image processing is spectacular, set up was really straight forward, the web interface is useful for backing up/changing settings. My only complaints are a lack of HDMI CEC, though I believe it has a 1/8" connector for control input if you run an additional cable, and it does take a bit long to re-sync when there is a resolution/frame rate/dynamic range change on the input.

I've had a ton of friends over watching F1 over the past season and had multiple people comment that they couldn't believe it was a projector given the sharp/bright image. My only other minor gripe is that the Harmony remote software just cannot seem to reliably turn the projector off as part of a macro, though complaining that a dead ecosystem doesn't support a new product is a bit silly.

3D is pretty much dead at this point, there was single digit releases of new 3D blu-rays last year (if you don't count re-releases of old horror movies).

Projector peeps, I have a nice section of my basement that would be pretty good for a small-medium home theater. It is currently probably an end of the year project, so I have time to shop around. With the current large TV competition ramping up (90+"), what would you recommend given my timeline?

Back in the day, I had a 720p DLP projector and a 100" screen that was REALLY fun to watch movies on with friends. We're now in the 4K/laser era of projectors. Back when I was shopping projectors, JVC and Sony were top choices, with Epson and BenQ close behind. Did that change in the last decade?

I'm a bit late, but I have to say that there is nothing like watching a movie on a projector. For general tv watching closer than 10 feet from the screen, go get an OLED. The picture will be brighter and the blacks will be blacker. For movies where you're sitting more than 10ft away, I would rather have a 100" 1080p projector than a 4k 85" OLED. There is something special about watching a movie on a projected screen.

With all the micro-led sets announced at CES this year from Hisense and TCL, it is really hard to suggest a projector for anything 100" and below. Between the cost, setup complexity, and need for light control, if you are thinking of sticking around a 100" screen, you are going to be in the same ballpark for a nice laser projector, screen, mount, etc... as you would be for a good quality micro-led set of similar size. I'm about 12' away from the 100" screen in my basement now and while it is 'cool', it isn't as awe inspiring as that size tv was a decade ago.

Would watching a movie on a 98" TV count, or it has to be a projector?

I am thinking of upgrading from my 82" Sammy to a Sony 98" X90L or Hisense 100" U8 mini LED TV (half price of the Sony)

If you take LTT's comments from CES seriously, each generation of Hisense super-large "ULED" TVs keeps getting better and better. Sony hasn't really been pioneering anything in the past few years (and I'm saying this as someone whose primary TV is a Sony A90J OLED. It's incredible, but I don't think they are striving for the XL-size wins like Hisense is)

There is something special about watching a projected image, at least for me. Light directed to the eye can feel harsher after watching for a while. Light reflected off of a screen never feels harsh, even after a couple hours of direct watching.
