I'm not an Iphone person but I really like the size of this phone and the standby battery life is pretty good. I carry two phones so this one is perfect for my secondary line.
wait until you buy the airtags just to find out these phones are so low tech that they cant take adv of the full features of airtags. returned.
how do I unlock one that was not automatically unlocked? (didn't activate it)
You have to activate it. Get the $10/month TracFone plan and, after 2 months, it unlocks. I did this for my daughter and it worked perfectly with a brand new iPhone SE 3.

If you have an existing Tracfone account and service, can you activate the SIM card inside the phone as a replacement SIM to fulfill the "SIM inside phone must be activated" requirement for the 60 day clock to start?
I don't think so, ever since they got taken over by Verizon they got a lot more strict or have tighter policies.
It used to be I could buy a phone from any of the Tracfone family that uses the Verizon network, pop my tracfone sim in and I think the website recognized the phone and it was eligible for unlock a year later and I could do so with no issues.
But when there was that iphone SE2 Black Friday deal a year or two ago, I could pop put my Tracfone sim in and it would work. But the website and texting the help kept saying that I was using bring my own device and it's not eligible for unlock. Then it wouldn't recognize the Total/Total Wireless sim when I tried to put it in either.
I tried chatting with customers service hoping that they'd rebrand the phone as I've seen mentioned on here every once in a while. But the customer service guy wasn't that helpful. He just had me activate another Tracfone sim I had laying around but it's still recognized as a bring your own device and not eligible for unlock.
You might have better luck with customer service than I did and this was probably a year or two ago. But I wouldn't count on it working.
I was hoping to get this iPhone SE 3rd Gen for $99.99 and have it stay locked by not choosing a plan or transferring a number at all, simply so I can use it as an iPod or sorts. I suppose that isn't possible through this deal.
Thanks anyway,
Tofu Vic
You can. Just stick it on airplane mode, it will still allow WiFi and act just like an iPod. That is what I do and it works fine.

Also, if you're looking for one of these, you may want to check OfferUp, Craigslist, Facebook, etc to see if anyone is selling new unlocked ones for cheap. Two months ago, people were buying them for $49 + $35 plan and many seemed to be buying for resale once they unlocked since they were dirt cheap for several weeks. Those have started to unlock now, so I've seen quite a few on the marketplaces lately. Some are still sealed and some are open box but still with the factory plastic screen protector in place, as a lot of resellers never even used them. You may be able to get a new one that's already unlocked for a good deal, as a lot of people probably loaded up on them at $84 total for the phone and plan.
Resellers aren't going to be trying to flip those phones that were a MASSIVE pain to buy for $20, particularly if they know you can't even try to get one for less than $150. I just did a quick check and they are all selling >$170
Which makes sense. If you are smart enough to know that you can buy an iphone SE 2022 for $150 using this deal we are discussing, then you probably bought one on black friday for $84. Or you are too scared of deals like these and you are buying from resellers on ebay who are going to charge you a convenience fee.

So I went ahead and bought another of these for a family member. THIS DEAL IS *NOT* THE SAME AS THE BF ONE!
On the old version of this deal, you could just buy it for $99+$50 plan, activate, wait 60 days, poof, $150 unlocked iPhone SE 3. Verizon didn't like this one bit it seems.
This deal, you need to port a number in to receive the phone discount. On top of that, they make you receive a text code from the number you are porting in. Then, as if that wasn't enough, they make you go through a 3rd party called "Veriff" that requires a drivers license or state ID to photograph the front and back, scan the barcode and then have you take a selfie with a smartphone in real-time to verify the biometrics of your face match your ID. Once you are done with this colonoscopy of hoops, you may buy the damn phone at $99+$50 plan+tax.

It totally depended on inventory and which stores people went to. I bought quite a few of them when they were $84 from multiple Walmarts and over a period of a couple of weeks. And that thread was absolutely massive with a number of others reporting similar experiences (although of course there were also some who couldn't find stock or get the deal). And there were definitely resellers in the thread. One long-term SDer mentioned getting 16 of them and planning to resell them for $250 once unlocked and I'm sure he wasn't the only one … but if someone grabbed a bunch of them and wants to dump them quickly, they could certainly end up selling for less. It'll completely depend on location and supply / demand, as these aren't exactly high-demand phones. Some end up getting posted nationally on OfferUp by accident and I saw a couple listed at $200 and one at $180, before negotiating (and no taxes with local sellers). Obviously, there can be scammers out there, but those appeared to be legit rated users and they looked like these ST ones from what I saw. And right now, someone has a new unlocked one with the plastic protector still on it listed on eBay for a buy it now price of $246 and prices overall have dropped significantly on them since those have started unlocking. But most people would likely end up with a much better deal locally if they can find them because eBay fees and such get pretty high and can be a nerve-wracking experience for a seller. For someone in the right place, I could easily see some very good deals out there for some of these already unlocked phones from people who snagged extras from the $84 deal. Also, the price of this deal is basically $150 plus tax and requires a port, so getting one that's new and already unlocked for around the same price may be a good idea for some (again, where such deals can be found … definitely worth taking a look locally with so many of those $84 phones that people were snapping up)

The problem when i took advantage of the deal wasn't inventory, it was that you had to purchase via the WARP system which no one at multiple stores knew how to use.
I finally found a person and a store and it took 1 hour for the person to figure out how to ring up the deal.

Yeah, I saw some reports of that too. The very first time I went, they didn't know how to ring it up and they actually just did a price override and had me buy a couple of $35 plan cards rather than using WARP. But most of the other Walmarts later were pretty fast with it and usually in and out in 15 minutes. But I'm also near a decent sized metro area with quite a few Walmarts around, so it wasn't a big deal if I happened to run across a clueless one, as I was bound to drive by another one a few days later.

Yeah, sounds like they really made it kind of a headache. Even after the $49, it was being sold for $99 plus a plan at both Walmart and the ST website without the extra hoops or verification. Those $99 deals were around for most of December and into January, but were kind of glossed over after the $49 deal. Someone posted it separately from the other thread in mid-December, but it wasn't very well received …
