After buying the Samsung Q series soundbar with atmos and all the fancy bells/whistles, thinking that stepping up to a serious bar would SOMEHOW give me what I was looking for, even then I felt underwhelmed. I sold it a week later.
What do I still use? Denon receiver from 2011 that I found at the thrift store for $20. Polk speakers from 2009.
If you have the space, a receiver and speakers are the way to go, even if it's a budget or used Denon/Yamaha. Used sub/$100 Jamo s810. Almost any bookshelf/center speaker, preferably with a cone 4" or bigger. Upfiring atmos is worthless in this category.
If you don't have room for all of that? Just a small amp and bookshelves/sub. I can't say I'm up to date with what's out there, but I've seen some amps from Aiyima/Fosi.
Have more money and space? Sennheiser Ambeo Max.

Overall a pretty good basic system for a small room... But certainly lacks lots of bells and whistles for today's age, so not sure the price is very good, even considering inflation and whatever...

Love the small size of the speakers, the amp with several source inputs (WIIM mini, TV, record player all connected simultaneously) the "programs" it has preprogrammed and the subwoofer providing way more than enough bass. Shakes the room at 1/2 power.
At the price we paid it was an absolute no brainer. Makes watching movies 100% better IMO

You're better off spending your $400 on a modern Vizio soundbar with atmos and bass module that isn't a mystery package with a brand name and pretty face, but has actually been tested and measured for fidelity…

But apparently the receiver has eARC as well via firmware update, really nice to know and makes it pretty future proof, as you can still get surround sound with a 4k120hz TV, or 8k tv, etc, even though the receiver only supports up to 4k60

Yes, you poor deprived generations who thought that you could get by on the latest iPhone speaker offering, a pair of headphones and omg a soundbar. Between the loudness wars, autotune and streaming quality no wonder more folks are feeling anxious. You'll never know the feeling of just pressing play on some great music via a set of stereo or surround speakers, closing your eyes and getting lost in the music and washing your worries of the day away.
