don't know much about the speakers, but the receiver is an RX-V385 [yamaha.com], which seems to go for a bit under $350 [amazon.com] (or ~$250-275 refurbed) just by itself

Have you listened to that soundbar?

After buying the Samsung Q series soundbar with atmos and all the fancy bells/whistles, thinking that stepping up to a serious bar would SOMEHOW give me what I was looking for, even then I felt underwhelmed. I sold it a week later.

What do I still use? Denon receiver from 2011 that I found at the thrift store for $20. Polk speakers from 2009.

If you have the space, a receiver and speakers are the way to go, even if it's a budget or used Denon/Yamaha. Used sub/$100 Jamo s810. Almost any bookshelf/center speaker, preferably with a cone 4" or bigger. Upfiring atmos is worthless in this category.

If you don't have room for all of that? Just a small amp and bookshelves/sub. I can't say I'm up to date with what's out there, but I've seen some amps from Aiyima/Fosi.

Have more money and space? Sennheiser Ambeo Max.

This is a nice setup with a nice sub. I bought this last year when it was about $220 at best buy. You can have it set up as a 5.1 home theater or 2.1 where all speakers are upfront

This is the same set that was being clearanced by Best buy almost exactly a year ago... It was for $220+tax I think
Overall a pretty good basic system for a small room... But certainly lacks lots of bells and whistles for today's age, so not sure the price is very good, even considering inflation and whatever...

Probably better than most sound bars at the same price. Not going to be easy to move around with and might look ugly to some people so those are things you'll have to consider vs a soundbar.

I got in on this deal also.

Love the small size of the speakers, the amp with several source inputs (WIIM mini, TV, record player all connected simultaneously) the "programs" it has preprogrammed and the subwoofer providing way more than enough bass. Shakes the room at 1/2 power.

At the price we paid it was an absolute no brainer. Makes watching movies 100% better IMO

Nice basic home theater system. Not top of the line of course but a nice system all the same.

I picked this up when it was $220.00 for a small garage system. Dumped the Yamaha speakers for $100.00 and used some nice Paradigms I had laying around. The V385 is a very decent budget receiver that has gone on sale for $199.00 a few times.

For not much more you can get one of the FP deal Denon's and an FP Jamo set with floor standers and sub for maybe $100 more. More channels, watts, and HDMI 2.1 with basic-but-better-than-this speakers.

That AVR's MSRP was $299 when it was released in…..drumroll please…2018!

You're better off spending your $400 on a modern Vizio soundbar with atmos and bass module that isn't a mystery package with a brand name and pretty face, but has actually been tested and measured for fidelity…

I got this from the Best Buy deal last year and still haven't had a chance to set it up (I know I know.. it was going in my bedroom and I was planning on waiting until I upgrade the TV, which I did around BF)

But apparently the receiver has eARC as well via firmware update, really nice to know and makes it pretty future proof, as you can still get surround sound with a 4k120hz TV, or 8k tv, etc, even though the receiver only supports up to 4k60

2004? You mean the year music went to die?

Yes, you poor deprived generations who thought that you could get by on the latest iPhone speaker offering, a pair of headphones and omg a soundbar. Between the loudness wars, autotune and streaming quality no wonder more folks are feeling anxious. You'll never know the feeling of just pressing play on some great music via a set of stereo or surround speakers, closing your eyes and getting lost in the music and washing your worries of the day away.
