Honeywell Home RTH6580WF Wi-Fi 7-Day Programmable Thermostat - Amazon Warehouse - Good used

In the last two weeks I bought three of these. I tried one first and it was really good so I standardized our house on them. The price has fluctuated. At one point it was $16 and I got two of mine for $18. $21.26 (now $26.51) is still a great deal on a good Wifi thermostat. I wanted a wifi thermostat without too much tech (no motion sensors or too much automated guesswork) that was reliable and easy to use. These filled the bill nicely. The app works reliably. The thermostat fit two of my three marks on the wall from the old thermostat with no painting and the old holes in the wall lined up nicely from all three. Both came in the orginal box and had been carefully repacked. Take a picture of the mac address on the back of the thermostat before you click it into place on the mount. You'll need the Mac address. They were easy to get online, I used my 2.4 wifi band as that seems to work better with all my home automation. A C wire is needed for these and I ended up running that to all three because I only had four wires on my older setup.

Look for the Amazon Warehouse listing for the best price. The price fluctuates so YMMV on the actual price.

"This unit does not work for many older homes who are not wired for a Common Ground Wire. Requires a new wire run from the heater or a C-wire adapter."
Unfortunately my unit doesn't have it, make sure yours have, or you are able to get it wired. Or this thing will be a hassle to use.

For the Wi-Fi functionality. However, all of the functions can be accessed directly from the unit if need be.

I have this unit, works well for what it is - just a programmable thermostat with wi-fi accessibility, If you want smart features, this is not it.

Speaking of the wi-fi, I had compatibility problems connecting to my router during setup. Used an older second router/access point to get it up and running. No longer using that router so updates may have taking care of the problem.

There are two different apps that you can use to connect, the Resideo Smart Home app and the Total Connect Comfort app.

One last thing for anyone switching to a modern thermostat, be sure to study the advance config settings for your particular device. Getting the settings correct for your specific HVAC is a must. For example, whether or not your switching valve is energized for heat or air (heat pump folks). Knowing all of this will save you a bunch of headaches.

are you saying that to use the app over wifi from several feet away, the thermostat needs to connect to their servers?

2.4Ghz. This model does not support 5Ghz.

Based on my experience with warehouse deals (often sending trash) I would avoid this. Not worth the hassle on something you need to work and be reliable. There is a good chance these are defective customer returns and there is no way they are testing these. It's a huge gamble. Sure you can return it but you will waste a lot of time installing.

Why C wire?
And why people don't have one?
Many modern digital and WiFi thermostats require a C wire because they need (Constant) power for the functions they provide. This thermostat requires one and does not have a battery substitution. Most thermostats that allow for battery substitutions for a C wire run through batteries quickly anyway. It does, however, remember all settings in the event of a power failure because those settings are in EPROM memory. As you can see from this thread, people don't know what a C wire is or why it is needed. This is a main reason why advanced thermostats have a high return rate. You can benefit from deals like this one, just know what a C wire is, if you have one, or if you can easily run one yourself. Two of my furnaces are 31 years old and have a "C" terminal on the furnace but no C wire was ever run. You can take off your thermostat cover and count the wires. If you have five wires, you either have a C wire already in place or you can easily just connect the fifth wire to a constant source on your furnace to make it a live C wire. Before working on it, turn off the power or breaker to your furnace but you are only dealing with 24v (low voltage). There is 110 or 220v high voltage in your furnace cabinet too so just to be safe, turn off the power to it first. I did not have a fifth wire but fairly easily snaked an additional wire up the wall to my furnaces.

I disagree, I bought three from Amazon Warehouse and all were good. Many people don't know what a C wire is and if they have one. That's likely a main reason for the returns like this and a lot of other smart thermostats.

That's fair. Warehouse deals does send a lot of trash. I still buy from them if the savings are good enough. One time I bought shoes for my son. They sent one shoe in a plastic bag...

2.4Ghz is better for home automation devices. Honeywell servers are not needed for the unit to operate. If they were to go down temporarily you just can't make a change your thermostat via your phone. There is no subscription, like the majority of smart thermostats, the cloud servers are used to remotely connect you to your thermostat, including while you are at and away from home. This is not really unique in smart thermostats, most have a cloud server somewhere that patches you through.

I want one that prevents my wife from changing it!!!

FYI, I have one one OP posted, and it's android app is not very good. You can't set temp offset and many other advanced features.

this is the best one I have tried.

I mean...yes. If they set my heat to max or AC on in the dead of winter I could see that being terrible.
