Not sure what variety this tree is, but it looks like it's a lila avocado. All avocados are hard to grow in zone 8. They will definitely need protection once you get anywhere below 30f. The other big thing about avocados is that they need good drainage. If you have clay soil, then this isn't an option for you and might need to consider a large container. Even if the tree services zone8, you have to remember that the fruit won't develop correctly in cold temperatures once they reach temps into the 20s. Most of the avocado fruit is usually ready around the end of winter, which makes it difficult to harvest. I recommend growing these in zone 9 or above.

Grow it for fun, not for fruit production. You will never recover what you spent for the amount of perceived savings from the fruit that you will consume in the future.

If you like, just peel the outer layer of the seed and place with soil it on a 3/5 gal pot. Water it often and you should have a 3 feet tree in 6 months.

Would this avocade tree be good for inside the home, like in an office?
Avocado trees are not appropriate for containers due to a 20 foot root system

Would this make a good house plant? Potentially an office?
if you get a 10w+ grow light (I usuall get sansi brand) and leave it on for 10 hours a day (wont cost much electricity). avocado leaves are nice and there are those who train it into a bonsai

can you guys recommend some low maintenance indoor trees used for decoration (like big green leaves) and not for fruit production? i prefer no fruits..since they seem to attract fruit flies. i just want some corner decoration!

EDIT: location - Bay Area (northern CA)

throwing this out there - multiple costcos in my area had these cold hardy avocado trees for $35 for 3 gallon container last summer. i was able to find the little cado which is one of the few dwarf varieties out there. they grow to about 10 ft tall and can stay in a container it's whole life and will survive my 9a/9b zone.

not necessarily low maintenance but monsteras and fiddle leaf figs will give you those large big green leaves. monsteras do fruit but i haven't seen very many do so indoor.

The Chicago Fig @ $22 and the Ice cream banana(blue Java) @$55 are good deals just by price.

Having never bought from this place I cant comment to the quality of the tress though.

Have bought about 40 trees from this place, all were in better shape and larger than I expected (I've gotten everything from quart plants to 7 ft ones) and delivered quickly and well-packed. They will have interested things that aren't always available at nurseries, and between coupons, sales and cash back some pretty good deals.
