Not sure what variety this tree is, but it looks like it's a lila avocado. All avocados are hard to grow in zone 8. They will definitely need protection once you get anywhere below 30f. The other big thing about avocados is that they need good drainage. If you have clay soil, then this isn't an option for you and might need to consider a large container. Even if the tree services zone8, you have to remember that the fruit won't develop correctly in cold temperatures once they reach temps into the 20s. Most of the avocado fruit is usually ready around the end of winter, which makes it difficult to harvest. I recommend growing these in zone 9 or above.

Grow it for fun, not for fruit production. You will never recover what you spent for the amount of perceived savings from the fruit that you will consume in the future.

If you like, just peel the outer layer of the seed and place with soil it on a 3/5 gal pot. Water it often and you should have a 3 feet tree in 6 months.

The Chicago Fig @ $22 and the Ice cream banana(blue Java) @$55 are good deals just by price.

Having never bought from this place I cant comment to the quality of the tress though.

Have bought about 40 trees from this place, all were in better shape and larger than I expected (I've gotten everything from quart plants to 7 ft ones) and delivered quickly and well-packed. They will have interested things that aren't always available at nurseries, and between coupons, sales and cash back some pretty good deals.
is the warranty worth purchasing?

Anyone in the North Texas DFW area, don't waste your money and spend it on anything else; you cannot grow avocados in North Texas.
Our winters are getting colder and colder ( Global warming). Smilie
I tried three times, took care of them, and covered them in winter, but eventually they just died.
I guess people in Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and further south can grow this.
I am not sure Fastgrowing Tree Map showed part of North Texas, but that's not true.

Wrong. When they bear fruits, they bear hundred of fruits. You can give them to family and friends. You can have your kids sell them at the street corner to earn money for their in game purchases. I have 1 avocado tree. This past season is the 2nd season it bears fruits. I got 186 avocados.

Avocado Cultivars [tropicalfruitnursery.com]. Bottom half of the page lists the cold hardiness of the cultivars.

But it'll be near a decade to get fruit off of a seed

Avocado trees are not appropriate for containers due to a 20 foot root system
Thanks for the info. Saved me from headache. The listing says for indoors. I wonder what their thinking?

It's possible they mean that the tree will survive, but chances of it giving fruit are slim to none. I would imagine after so many years the root system would become so compacted that it would eventually die. Personally I wouldn't buy a $63 tree with the intention of allowing it to die indoors.

There's no guaranteed rewards even if you do plant the seed; I learned this with my kids

Edit: (this is a joke, I actually love my kids, most of the time)

I've bought 3 trees from FGT, and they are thriving. My maple grew from 5 ft to 8 ft in one year.
